Belief is a choice, yes, but it is informed by experience.
I choose to believe in God because the alternative is empty and dark. If there is no God, then there is no objective truth beyond what is observable in science. That means no objective good, no objective evil, no objective source of morality beyond what we create in our neurons throughout evolution. (I believe in evolution, btw.) It means that nothing means anything, and life is about nothing more than doing what you want, taking what you want, and getting away with whatever you can. There is no eternal justice.
Don't care to live that way. I just don't.
