One more reason why I like my MVNO Visible service for $25 monthly with no contract and unlimited everything.

quote:

the telecommunications giant said Saturday that a dataset found on the “dark web” contains information such as Social Security numbers for about 7.6 million current AT&T account holders and 65.4 million former account holders.

The company said it has already reset the passcodes of current users and will be communicating with account holders whose sensitive personal information was compromised.

Where are the AT&T simps now who contend that AT&T > Verizon?

$1.29 each for people who suffered a loss. $44,600,000 for the lawyers.

Does any of it even matter at this point?

In September of 2017, Equifax announced a data breach that exposed the personal information of 147 million people.

When the credit agencies have been hacked, all the info is out there anyway.

My data has been leaked so many times at this point I don't think it matters. I just keep that Equifax credit monitoring service.

I got the email the other day.

And this happened in 2019 or earlier...

Considering how often my info has been hacked from the USG, one credit agency, ATT and 1-2 others....

A couple of eye-opening nuggets buried in the article.
quote:

7.6 million current AT&T account holders and 65.4 million former account holders.

AT&T has hemorrhaged customers over the years, but they still have your data stored if you were ever a customer, and it’s not secure.

Also, this has happened before, but AT&T tried to cover it up.
quote:

it closely resembles a similar data breach that surfaced in 2021 but which AT&T never acknowledged, said cybersecurity researcher Troy Hunt. “If they assess this and they made the wrong call on it, and we’ve had a course of years pass without them being able to notify impacted customers,” then it’s likely the company will soon face class action lawsuits

Do you pay for this?

Freezing your credit at Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union is free and no-one can see it. You do have to unfreeze if you apply for credit, but that's free, too.

The breach happened 5 years ago, the damage has been done. There was another breach 3 years ago that they’ll let us know about two years from now.

Paradoxically, I think the prevalence of these kinds of breeches will make us more secure over time, as organizations will need to stop saying “you know this person’s date of birth and the last four digits of their social, so you must be them!”

It's probably not only AT&T. They have sister companies too. Cricket wireless. That's what I use.

I don't particularly care for either, but I am on Cricket because it's affordable and it has good service where I need it. Verizon can go frick themselves. They get worse year after year. It's like they want to go bankrupt intentionally.

Plus with a $60 plan with Cricket you get a HBO/Max subscription for as long as you keep the $60 plan.
