A's on the rise in U.S. report cards, but SAT scores founder

Recent findings show that the proportion of high school seniors graduating with an A average — that includes an A-minus or A-plus — has grown sharply over the past generation, even as average SAT scores have fallen. In 1998, it was 38.9%. By last year, it had grown to 47%.

Actually, they said, the upward creep is most pronounced in schools with large numbers of white, wealthy students. And its especially noticeable in private schools, where the rate of inflation was about three times higher than in public schools.

flounder?
You one of the A's that didn't do well on the SAT?

Grade inflation which doesn't relate to actual intelligence.

Gotta keep those pockets full and those helicopter parents happy.
I had a parent threaten a lawsuit with a teacher over their kid not getting a perfect attendance certificate because they cut class for half a day. As bad as it is dealing with parents that don't give a shite at all on one end of the spectrum, there's some parents out there at the other end who are just as bad.

But it doesn't equate to admissions at the undergraduate level. All you have to do is get a foot in the door

Yeah, not all private schools provide a good education. In fact, where I live, kids will leave public school to go to the private school, because they don't have to take the exit exam or whatever and it is easier for them to graduate HS.

No where did I say that? But I think we would all agree that there is a difference between functional intellegience and test taking intelligence. There is and there isn't some overlap in this realm
This story is interesting though; I had read that standardized test scores were on the raise. And just from my interactions with the youngins, I'm not quite sure if they are functionally smarter or just better test takers.

It appears that the original replier is unaware that words can often times have more than one meaning.

This board is full of illiterate rubes.

The title says "SAT scores founder"
It should say flounder...your reading comprehension skills would get you an A at these schools too

Oh, you mean the snowflake culture where everyone gets a trophy for participation doesn't work when applied to education, either?
EDIT: Also, just so some of you might leave this thread a little smarter than you came in, "founder" is a word. It is a verb meaning to fail, to break down, to falter. For instance: "The negotiations foundered because of failure to agree on a single issue", "YipSkiddlyDooo foundered in this thread" or, if you prefer, "SAT scores founder".
I guess we know who foundered during the verbal portion of that test.

Stop forcing coaches to teach.
Beyond that, I don't see an easy solution to this problem beyond paying teachers more money and making the education curriculum harder for college students.
A lot of teachers are lazy and just waiting on a paycheck. Others don't really know anything about the subject they teach or are more interested in the students "liking" them by making the class ridiculously easy or letting the kids goof off.
Teaching below the college level is such a disrespected profession in the United States. The mountain of government bureaucracy to wade through is probably second only to the healthcare profession. Teachers no longer have the support of the parents. They deal with snot nosed brats on a daily basis and should one have the nerve to discipline the child, the parent takes the side of the child. Society at large doesn't think much of teachers. Teaching is seen as an easy profession for people who cannot succeed in the real world. The pay is crap, and there's little sense of appreciation for putting forth extra effort or support from the administration.
