Over at Google GOOGL -0.67%, a computer program using a database of movie scripts was asked again and again by researchers to define morality. It struggles to do so, and in a conversation recorded by its human engineers, becomes exasperated and ends the conversation by lashing out at its human inquisitor.

The conversation looks like something Siri would say: I dont know, I dont know, I dont know, snappy preprogrammed retort. Once again showing that our best AIs are little better than a lookup table of questions and responses.

Neural networks are becoming more and more powerful all of the time. At the end of the day, though, someone has to program it. Human beings can't set a true standard on morality or integrity so how would the software know any better? Give that thing numbers, and it'll melt your brain. Ask it a question with an easy answer, and it'll spit it out. Ask it questions on a philosophical level, and it'll get annoyed just like any other human when pestered without an answer.
