So it stands to reason our problems would be 5 times as worse. Scale is very important and you need to compare apples to apples.

Which is why one uses population percentages and not total number of diagnosed cases.

I know others have already pointed this out, I just feel that it really needs to be reinforced.

Some. Its a lot more western than people realize. They didn't all have jacked up teeth.

I only made out with one, who actually was good looking However, keep in mind I was in my awkward stage, was still short with giant feet, and had braces.

They did really like the American boys. The French guys did not like us too much. We actually got into a schoolyard scuffle with a couple (2 posters on this site were in it with me )

Did they shave their vagines?

Sadly, I didn't get that far. I have however hooked up with a Frenchie when I went back in college and she had a Hitler stache above the 'gine, which was ironic because she had a Jewish last name.

I've seen this article multiple times, and I despise it. This isn't because I think there are some good points made about the societal expectations of parenting, behavior, and structure and the tolerance the behaviors--or lack thereof.

My problem is that the author notes the different classification system, but then completly ignores that when discussing the differences in prevalence rates. It's a dishonest attempt to exaggerate the differences by comparing apples to oranges.

French moms don't play. Their kids don't act up and they will not hesitate to discipline them or get onto them in public.

They disciplined me, not physically, but scolded and with "quiet time" in my room.

Me and my American pals (a couple on TD), would go to the grocery store and legally buy a bottle of vodka and drink it with OJ on the trains when we'd "go downtown" on the weekends.

They didn't know how to discipline for that because they don't have that issue really with underage kids getting wasted. She had to ask our teacher chaperone if it was ok for us to do that

Answer was of course "no".

ETA:

before you guys judge, we were bored 16 year olds who only knew each other and were used to drinking on weekends back home in 10th grade America. We did all the cool site seeing on weekdays with field trips so weekends were kind of free reign.

It's still an invalid comparison because they use a completly difference diagnosis system.

This is a very different way of seeing things from the American tendency to attribute all symptoms to a biological dysfunction such as a chemical imbalance in the child's brain.

Could we not infer that maybe that is the issue in itself? They don't over-diagnose as much as we do?

Not often I get to talk about that trip. Sad how much I took it for granted at that age. I wish 2015 me could go back and kick 2004 me in the nuts.

Maybe. But from what I gather, the French of issues of their own regarding this. They appear to rely much more on unproven and outdated Freudian and neo-Freudian psychodynamic theories and treatments. That's not something to prop up as ideal.

Not from that data, no.

There have been published studies of the prevalence, and although it's clearly lower in France, this difference is not as extreme as the author suggests.

That's what's frustrating with that article. Rather than using valid comparisons, which would still support the generally thesis, the author uses invalid comparisons to exaggerate the point. It's an unnecessarily dishonest representation.
