I've been checking out some of Edward Hopper's art lately. The algorithm started throwing them up on IG and well, I've wound up really liking his stuff although I usually like impressionist and David type works. Like his use of defined color and how his paintings often convey a sense of loneliness. Here is some of his other work besides the famous Nighthawks.

I’ve always liked Hopper.
Take a look at Charles Sheeler. He reminds me of Hopper, but less emotion.
I also like some of Demuth’s stuff.

Thanks. Living in the general Chicago area my whole life, I've been to the Art Institute many times, and am always in awe of that work. Just something about it.

And this commercial played around here, with Jennifer Hudson (from American Idol), a Chicago native.

and this looks interesting:

JMW Turner tells Hopper to sit down and see how it’s properly done:

I like hopper his painting sort of remind me of a realist version of Norman Rockwell in that it depicts the times he lived in but with out the rosy lens of Rockwell

I think they grew up in similar areas (hopper in Nyack NY and Rockwell in the county next to it in Mamaroneck) just north of nyc

But Rockwell is a bit of a hallmark card type emotion while hoppers work is kind of poetic, and as the op mentioned, illustrates the loneliness of the human condition, especially for those in large cities

If you like the high contrast, check out Joaquin Sorolla.
