LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Arkansas Supreme Court on Thursday said a judge wrongly denied a request for new genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the killing of three boys nearly 30 years ago.

In a 4-3 decision, the court reversed the 2022 ruling denying the request to test evidence from the 1993 crime scene where three 8-year-old boys were found brutally slain in a drainage ditch near West Memphis. The additional testing was sought by Damien Echols, one of the three men convicted in the slayings.

I didn’t know that. I would love it if they came back with a match with some totally off the radar serial killer.

Why wouldn't the state want to test the DNA? Hmmm

I heard him in an episode of midnight gospel. Was pretty good.

I don't think he'd be calling for DNA evidence if he did it, since he's already been released from prison.

Those dudes got railroaded

I also don't think the state would have fought so hard not to test it if it believed the DNA belonged to one of the three.

One of the guys that was initially convicted is who asked for it and you think they'd do so to prove they did it?

“Their interpretation of Act 1780 means anyone who has ever been convicted of a crime — whether or not they be in State custody — can seek DNA or other scientific testing even if such testing would not prove that individual’s innocence,” she wrote.

Attorney General Tim Griffin, whose office argued the case, raised similar concerns and said Thursday's ruling “undermines finality in long-closed criminal cases and will result in unserious filings."

Cant find out we screwed up.

And people wonder why lawyers are hated.

Is your belief in their guilt based on facts and your intuition about the case or more on how insufferably annoying they and their high profile supporters were? I mean it was hard to like ANYBODY associated with this case. What a freak show.

Terry got far away just to wait for the ruling. I’m sure he fled quickly

People who believe this all believe DNA is “the devil’s science.” This case is really a proxy war between those who want to live in modernity versus those being dragged out of the Stone Age kicking and screaming.

Any judicial system that values the finality of a verdict rather than its accuracy should not be trusted in the first place.

This. Like instant replay in sports, you should get it right especially if you are putting innocent people in jail.

Pretty sure DNA evidence in early 2000s and bite mark evidence from late 90s were not a match for the 3. They are out of jail already. Why would they want new dna evidence to be examined if it was them?

Terry Hobbs was the one neighbors heard calling for the boys, then in the days after was washing stuff in his stepsons room (even the curtains) and surgically removed his teeth after the killings and before they could get his teeth imprint. They also found one of his hairs in the shoelace tying up one of the boys…his buddy’s hair was also found on tree stumps near by

I’m with some others. Terry better be running for the border

A watching the three Paradise Lost documentaries the focus of who did it changed from possibly being Terry Hobbs to one of the other boys who was murdered step dad. It was actually pretty convincing. If you interested in the West Menphis 3 case and you haven't watched Paradise Lost III I suggest you do.
