Argument on the side of the road about lost item

So I was riding down the 4 lane highway (grass median) and I saw a ladder that had fallen from a vehicle. I was going fast so I caught a U-turn, heading back the other way, made another U-turn to go get the ladder. As I approach and pull off the road a guy is backing up on the shoulder. I throw the ladder in my vehicle and he says that he was coming to get it. He asks if it was mine and I said no. He asks if I knew who it belonged to and I said no. So he tells me that it should be his because he was already backing up to get it. I explained that I had already turned around and doubled back to pick it up but he was adamant that it should belong to him. Who was in the right?

i don't know what to think. i've always pegged you as a pretty rich, affluent guy, but now you're the kind of guy that picks up ladders on the side of the road.

Is this the kinda shite that really goes on in Louisiana?

I believe the proper protocol in a situation like that is to fist fight to prove ownership.

What are pawn shops paying for ladders that have fallen out of trucks these days?
Maybe you should lay off the watches for a bit until you get your life in order.

I did that for a baggie of coke once and the real owner of it got beat up. I mean, what was he gonna do, report me to the cops?

It belongs to neither of you and you should have left it on the side of the road.

This is the kind of shite that goes on anywhere there is a free ladder involved. Have you seen how fricking expensive those things are?
