Are there ways to clean dogs teeth without anesthesia?

We have a little puppy whose about 4 lbs and he's got a tooth that's falling out and loose and he's not eating bc of it. Fiancée is scared to clean his teeth with him going under bc her friends dog was a little smaller and died while under. Seeing if there are any other solutions? Thanks

is this a young dog or just a small dog?

I brush mine with a toothbrush.

Why are you trying to clean his teeth? Shouldn't you be removing the tooth?

He's around 3 years old and he just isn't eating right now and when I look in his mouth I see the loose tooth but I don't want to just pull it out and hurt him. The vet we use is closed, any ideas? What if it's infected or whatnot. I'm heading out to get him softer food now

Bc his teeth overall look dirty. We do that liquid in his water to clean them + that dental bone and they're still dirty

he seems a little young for that, but if the tooth is visibly loose, I don't see a way around anesthesia in order to remove it. I would soak his regular food in some broth or something like that to soften it until you can get him some proper care. also, make sure the food is room temp, as too hot or too cold will hurt him more.

Your dog is in pain--that is its way of letting you know to help it...take it to the vet asap and have them pull the tooth and clean the others.
Do it.
Do it.

You don't brush his teeth? They make special toothbrushes for small dogs and toothpaste just for dogs.
I have a 9 year old pug and get his teeth cleaned (under anesthesia) every year(it's included with his pet plan at PetSmart). He's had it done every year for the past 7 years. Never had any issues. They always do bloodwork prior to putting him under to make sure he is ok for the anesthesia. Only issues he has had was acting like a drunk for a couple hours after I bring him home.
This was him last year

Ok thanks, any idea why this would cost at the Er? Last year he jumped on the dinner table and drank a pitcher of sangria and we rushed him to a dog Er and they kept him overnight to do dialysis and it was $1200 and I felt ripped off but I didn't have any options bc it was a weekend and his vet was closed just like mow

Bully sticks help.
Also, if you can introduce your dog early on to a toothbrush and dog toothpaste, it can become a "reward" if done correctly.
I brush my Doberman's teeth once a week. I also use an "additive" to her water. Her teeth are very clean.

Fiancée does brush their teeth but still there's tartar you can see, she just fears the anesthesia bc her friends dog died in it so we just do the cleaner in the water + dental stix

I just let my pit chew on the neighbor's kids. Loose teeth get removed, and they stay white. Though make sure it isn't a fat kid. They aren't as effective.

Nurse, what is a Pet Plan at pet smart? We have three pugs and might be interested in something like this. Thanks

If you are concerned about the cost, maybe you can just ask if the ER can give you antibiotics to give the dog until you can see your vet on Monday and arrange for the tooth to be pulled? If the tooth is infected, you don't want that infection spreading to the brain. Expect to pay about $100 for just the visit itself to the animal ER.
Maybe do like another poster said and give broth and very soft food that won't hurt your dog to eat?

It's through their vet clinic Banfield. It's like $19.99/mo for puppies and $34.95/month for adults. For the puppy plan it covers ALL of their needed shots. Any visits to Banfield are free. Includes the cost of them being spayed/neutered. You get two comprehensive exams included a year with the plan(includes all routine labwork done).
The adult plan includes the two comprehensive exams a year and includes an annual teeth cleaning(which that can easily run $300-400 alone). If enrolled in the plan you can go to any Banfield location (which makes it convenient if you are traveling and your dog gets ill).
