I don't think they're underpaid, but I do think they could use some more funding for the classroom as they routinely have to dip into their own pockets for supplies.

I'm cool with the amount that I'm paid.

There's the rub. Because of Mr. Jindal's "reforms", experienced teachers are retiring left and right. It is becoming more and more difficult to find qualified, certified teachers in Louisiana.

I don't have kids, so I am not really aware of whether there are enough teachers or not...haven't heard of any kids who weren't able to go to school because there wasn't a teacher, though...

Yes, but Scruffy will only support paying them more if they make it more competitive.

Schools are having to, in many cases, hire unqualified, uncertified teachers to fill vacancies.

Get rid if the union. Good teachers should get paid better.

What kind of competitive guidelines is Scruffy thinking should be considered? Just curious.

I'm not sure if we can make it competitive considering we have a need for so many and the pay isn't that attractive.

But teaching doesn't require you to go to a good school or do particularly well, and having not that smart people teaching isn't really a great recipe for success.

Then my answer to the original question would be "sometimes"....in cases where no qualified teacher is available, more money should be offered to lure a qualified candidate....

Then no...

Maybe in actual salary amount, but the time off and benefits balance that out.

Except they don't get paid for that time off.

The qualification for being a teacher is being unqualified for any respectable job. If they were respectable people, they wouldn't be teachers.

This is my feeling as well.

I also hate that the teachers who really excel and do a fantastic job get raises according to the same salary scale as those who suck. At least reward the good teachers.
