Are LED bulbs really worth the investment?

I have 66 recessed lights in my home. Just spent $235, to make all of them LED. Some people say these things last 10 years. Anyone know if this is true or not? I figured what the hell - $235 wasn't that much to spend, and if they last only half the time that they're supposed to then at least I don't have to change bulbs every 6 months.

Just changed some 4ft fluorescents to LED. Glad I did and hope they last a long time.

Uhh.. More like 20-22 years. At least the ones I bought from ACE are.

Haha! Yeah, I found out that if you buy in bulk the price per bulb is really close to a regular bulb, that's why I mentioned the number of lights. Wasn't trying to brag - hose is about 2800 sf/living.

No one knows if they last that much longer because they've only been out a couple of years, but they are rated to and they put out a much better and brighter light.

I switched over to LEDs in my house about 4 years ago when they really cost a fortune and they have more than paid for themselves in electricity savings per month. Reduced my house electricity bill by 20-25% depending on the time of year.

I also switched over two of my office buildings in 2014 and I saw even better results to the point where our capital investment of $120k in one building to retro-fit every light to LED has resulted in a cost savings of around 35% in the summer months to 25% in the winter. The reason for the larger savings in the office building environment is due to the heat that incandescent/fluorescent bulbs put out either from the bulb itself or from the bulb housing. The less heat the less the AC needs to kick on. Good LEDs do not put out any heat whatsoever.

With this said I would stay away from the CREE brand of LEDs because those don't last as well as other brands. I would say they have about a 10% fail rate within 2 years or the cheaply made plastic or glass encasing will fall of due to not enough glue or a they used a substandard glue for the bulbs.

I started to do the switch on our lighting, but quit it as I didn't like how they dimmed. The dimming sucked, I even bought new "LED" dimmers, still sucked.

What bulbs did you buy for the recess cans? I have read that not all LEDs will work in recess lights because the heat from LEDs gets directed upward instead of down.

We have roughly 25 recess lights in our house, and they currently all have the Philips mini twist 900 lumens CFLs in them, and I would like to move toward LED.

The short answer is yes.

You made a good choice. With that many lights, your LEDs will save you a good amount of change over their lifetime, which is very, very long.

There's really no disadvantage to LEDs other than up-front cost, and even that is starting to fall.

no problem with CREE or their 20 year guarantee.

in fact i had some that were buzzing and home depot swapped them to the NEW bulbs that just came out (which are amazing btw) no questions asked.

eta don't buy the 98 cent walmart LEDs and you'll be fine.

Heat from an LED shouldn't be an issue at all. I put these in 25 recessed fixtures in my house 3 years ago and couldn't be happier.
