I don't care. I'll wear them with pants if I don't feel like putting on socks and I'm just running to the store or something. Luckily, people dress pretty trashy in general where I live. I usually feel pretty good that I'm not one of the people wearing pajamas out in public, which I see all the time here.

Yep. If you aren't within, say, 200y of the water flip flops are absolutely trashy. Find a picture of Buckley, RFK/JFK, Stevenson in flip flops.

Well they're not what I'd call classy.
I'll rock Rainbows for casual stuff during the summer like chilling at a friend's place while wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Or if I'm going on the boat or down at the pool. Or just generally chilling outside in the sun.
If I'm going out to actually do stuff like eat or hang out with people, I don't wear flip flops. I don't see a problem with it though. If you're dressed like a slob and throw on flops, it doesn't matter because you're already a slob. If you're wearing a nice t-shirt and shorts, and throw on flops, it doesn't really look bad.

Nah, they are not trashy as long as they are worn in an appropriate setting. I see lots of folks wearing them casually in public places.
