Good part was being able to see through some packs and cherry pick the ones with the good cards in the back spot

The 88 Donruss was the easiest. You could open one pack, and you could tell exactly where in the box the good cards would be. They packaged them in exactly the same sequence in every box I ever opened.

I have a Bowman Griffey rookie card. Also have Steve Yzerman's rookie card (hockey Hall of Famer for those who don't follow the NHL).

Favorite card I kept.

Magic Johnson/Larry Bird rookie card.

I'm still holding onto my Kevin Maas 1990 Upper Deck rookie card hoping it's worth enough to put my kid through college.

I enjoy going back through every now and again and look at the players you put in the card box, and who you put in the books. I cracked mine open for the first time in a long time a few years ago.

In the book- Shareef Abdur Rahim, Stephon Marbury Napoleon Kaufman, and Steve Francis.

In the box- Tom Brady, Tim Duncan, Dirk Nowitzki

I kept those too. The person responsible for quality control on that HAD to get fired.

Is it conceivable for the market to return, or will it never return?

Gone forever dude.

I used to love buying a pack when we went to town, I'd even chew the shitty bubble gum for a few minutes until it was devoid of taste and disintegrated. The thrill of thumbing through the pack to see who you got.

the disappointment of a pack full of White Sox, Brewers, Orioles and Mariners players.

Yea, I nailed some good inserts that way. It lead to some of my big scores in pack wars. If you don't know what that is, two people buy a pack and whomever has the best card takes all the cards. So in 1996 Topps Chrome I knew which packs had refractor inserts and would buy those packs. I'd use them on different days so no one figured me out. It lead to one of my biggest scores. Guy pulled out a Kobe RC that ended up being a gem/mint when I got is graded. I through down the Kobe RC Refractor. Sold the base RC for $1800 and the refractor for $2300 after grading.

Are we in agreement that Upper Deck ruined the industry?

Or did it come before when Topps Donruss, and Fleer held the market?

They were a big part with the insert fad

The insert fad is fine. The big three flooded the market with so many cards that they became worthless.

My favorite story is when Topps was starting out they had a set or two that was missing a number so everyone kept trying to complete sets but there was no number 176 or something along those lines.

The insert had just threw gas on the fire. You already had a devalued base set due to quantity. Now people cared even less because you wanted that snip of a game used jersey. What did I get a down vote for?

If you get a penny apiece for commons atm I'd be absolutely shocked. You can average that if you include some decent cards though I think

Exactly. I'm counting my whole collection. I've got a few older cards, and a lot of Montana, Rice, B. Sanders rookies, etc. I probably have a few hundred cards that are worth $20+.
