Maybe this could help clear up a few things. That particular source is more than likely Iridium 192. It has a half life of ~74 days. The camera should be locked and accessing the source would be very difficult even if you knew what you are doing. If I remember correctly the internal components are composed of depleted uranium which is denser then lead and a much more effective shield. (I think) to be noted the camera is designed to handle the abuse incidents like this. The company responsible is in a lot of trouble obviously. This situation isn't as bad as one would think, even if the source is exposed. If the source was exposed it would be a lot easier to locate though.

Ir192. Doubt the source is out because deq has meters that can detect even secured sources. From what I understand these cameras can take some serious abuse before any accidental exposure could be made.

Handheld PMI testing guns go for well over 15k, so yeah, who knows what that camera is worth.

Am I the only one that finds losing a 70 pound camera along an interstate a little suspicious?

They found the camera, it was not cracked.

That's what they want you to think. Probably just some high profile's camera with nudes on it.
Maybe it's the one with the nudes of Les Miles that JJ had.

Back in the day in the radiography safety course I had to take for NDI school they showed us pics of an incident where a passerby on a job site had found the radioactive pill that had fallen off the telescoping arm of one of these cameras.
Some poor shmuck stumbles by after the crew left and found a really strange looking little "rock"
Puts it in his back pocket where it stays the rest of the day until he returned home. At some point after getting home his butt cheek starts itching terribly. Heads to ER after a bit. They finally put two and two together but not in time to help him much.
I believe he lived, but I'm thinking death might have been a better option. When all was said and done it had eaten away his butt cheek completely over the period of months. Skin grafts wouldn't take. Plugs of thigh meat were tried to heal the wound. Didn't take.
One of the most disgusting things you'll ever see.
I can't imagine what the pain must have been like.
