Friends please let me know if I'm overreacting. Washing machine locking mechanism broke. YouTube'd the general procedure to replace (pretty simple and straight forward) and looked up the part online. I called an appliance repair place, told them what was wrong, and enquired about repair cost. I was informed there was $102 service call fee but the fee would be put towards the parts and labor of the job. Thought it was a little high but I like the idea of a professional doing the job right. Tech came out, looked at the washer, immediately agreed what was wrong. He then said he would plug the parts and labor into his computer and let me know the cost. He Informed me that
- labor was going to be $197 (according to him work would take 15-30mins),
- part was $93 (I had already looked online and part was $66 tax included),
- $28 restocking fee
- tax on top of all these charges

$350 to fix a minor part of a $500 washing machine. The inflated cost of the part and the restocking fee is one thing but $197 for 30min max of work just seems astronomical for the difficulty of the work to be performed. Told him no thanks. I have since removed the broken door lock (took 15min with me stumbling around a bit) and purchased the replacement part (it will be in tomorrow). Reinstall seems to be really simple as well.

Should I be pissed about this and call out the company on social media or is that the actual price for this type of repair thing these days?

I KNOW SHAME ON ME FOR NOT DOING IT MYSELF!! FML

price gauging

Just swap out the part yourself.I had something similar happen on mine (the locking mechanism busted so my dryer would continue to cycle even when the dryer was on). Part cost me $15 bucks.

Did you shop around to find what general labor costs were first? Part markup is a part of any business so you can't always go by the cost on the internet. Next time either shop around or fix it yourself. No sense in blogging your frustration like a lonely housewife who's kid doesn't get a kindergarten graduation.

Because most people are too stupid to figure it out on their own. He's getting paid for knowing how to do it.

That doesn't seem far off. Everyone has a markup on materials.

You probably could have bitched enough to get that removed. Restocking what?

You did the right thing. Just remember... it's only price gouging when you accept the deal.

Shame on me if I don't want others to be taken advantage of. If I was one of those people then I would have already done it.

Every company does... they're in the business to make money. I pay $5 for a coke at an LSU baseball game because that's the only way I'll get a coke. Some people will pay $350 to fix a washing machine because that's the only way they'll get their washing machine fixed.

he may be gauging his price off of his desire to do the job

Seriously? People like word of mouth as long as its not honest about the negative stuff as well.

Dude tried to charge me $500 for replacing 2 shingles a few weeks back. You're damn right I told every friend I have.

At a rate of $400-800 an hour. I have had a plumber install a garbage disposal and new sink for under $100 in labor.

If you did this, why did you even call someone out to look at it? If it's simple and straight forward to change out, just do it yourself.

That's one of the truly awesome things about owning a home, you can do whatever he frick you'd like to your shite. No one is going to let me take apart their washing machine, their loss, but goddamn I have a screw driver and no fricks to give I can take apart my own. I've changed motherboards from fridges, pumps from washing a machines...you name it. $350 to fix a $500 unit is a total loss, may as well crack it open and see if you can start diagnosing failed parts. Burnt up shite looks burnt up. The fridge motherboard had multiple giant burn spots on it. Researching it a bit turned up a newer part number that fixed the weak points...worked perfectly.

It's not gouging, call another company if you want competitive pricing.
