Apartment lease and price question

So me and my roommate have lived in the same apartment for 17 months. When we signed the lease the first year, we signed a 12 month lease. Paid on time, no problems.
When it came time to renew we had a choice between a 6 month and a 12 month lease. Because of the fluidity of our job situations we decided to sign a 6 month lease. The price went up about $45 when we signed the 6 month lease.
I specifically asked "if we sign a 6 month lease rather than a 12 month, will our price go up if we sign for another 6 months when this lease runs out?" The response was "no, it will stay the same."
So now it is time to renew the lease. And sure enough they want to raise the price $30 on the lease. I told them what was promised me 6 months ago. Their response was that management had changed and they shouldn't have promised you that. They couldn't do anything.
So basically they are saying that frick you I don't care what was promised you, we don't have to hold our end of the promise.
Do I have any leg to stand on? Or do they have every right to raise the price again and I was too naive and got hoodwinked?

They can't promise that. You are only promised the price on paper for the term that you sign. Unfortunately, that's one of the good things about signing a longer lease term.
And $45 per month is pretty cheap for a short term fee...

A verbal promise?
Yeah, you have no leg to stand on
Yeah, you have no leg to stand on

They have every right to raise the rent outside of your leasing term. Especially in your case where there was a change in management.

Of course I don't know your personal situation, but is all the hassle of fighting this thing worth the $15 extra per month you would have to pay?

You don't have a leg to stand on, but I do admit it is pretty shitty to raise the price in situations like this. Even the first time they did it. Most landlords are glad when good tenants choose to stay beyond their lease because it cuts out so much work.

This is probably a large complex. That totally depends on changes in the market. Last place I work would increase quite a few people at the end of their lease.
New company is not so big on it.

You should be lucky
New management could have raised it more

well tell them that they shouldn't have taken over something that they weren't fully aware of all promises made.

I would have signed the 12 month lease if I wasn't promised the price wouldn't go up. The $15 isn't a big deal it's just the fact that they just didn't care what the previous management did. i should have gotten it on paper.

Always get it in writing.
Though if the company changed they may not honor it.

Are you in a fairly good area? You usually see this happen with new management when they want to come in and price out tenants that they'd rather move out/move elsewhere.

This might be the case. It's no ghetto but it isn't the nices complex in the nicest part of town either.

Should have signed a 6 month lease for x$ with a lessee's optional 6 month renewal at that same x$. Live and learn boy.

Always get things in writing, if a company is not willing to do this its not a reputable company to begin with.
The new management act is used by every complex on earth to slide promises into a black hole.

No, you don't.
And I have had people try and raise the price on my lease by $500/mo before without it being short-term, so consider yourself lucky it's only $45.

A company willing to verbally promise that a rent will not increase without having a clue what the market will do is also not a reputable company.

Aspy, can you help me to negotiate my next apartment deal?

What city? How close is it to where you work? Would it cost you less to buy a place, then rent a room to your room mate now?
Rent does not build equity. Rent is gone like a fart in a hurricane. Maybe you should just sign this next six month lease and use the six months to find a place to buy.
Also, you need to find the new landlord's wife and give her a proper stretching for his insolence and huge attitude. He feels like he has you over a barrel and calls you Cuckboi behind your back.

Correct.
You should check market rates at comparable units in your area. Arm yourself with knowledge. Ask what has been done in the last 6 months that deserves an extra $30.
