Apartment complex wants to raise my rent by 15%

Just got my lease renewal offer yesterday. 15% increase, with an absurd $100 “common areas/amenity fee” if I renew.
Is it even worth trying to negotiate? I am not quite ready to buy a house in this current market, and I don’t want to move all of my shite to another apartment, but I may have to. The renewal fee in itself is pretty laughable.

of course you're going to renew.

If you're in El Cid, it is worth it.

The last apartment I lived in before I bought tried to raise mine like 25%. I got a good deal on the first lease but that shite is ridiculous.
And I know for a fact it wasn't completely full becuase the unit next to me was unrented.

We sold all of our residential apartments in coastal California because I got tired of NOT being able to set rent at whatever the frick I felt like.
We were charging 2800 for 2 bedrooms and we couldn't go up much. So we sold them to a wealthy Asian lady.
You renters with your eviction moratoriums, rent control, etc are a royal pain in the arse. Fycking eviction moratorium my arse.
ETA--missed the NOT there. Thanks to good buddy Mingo

If you're already going to move, it's always worth negotiating. A good tenet is worth so much more than a shitty one.

I was just in your situation. They wanted to raise my rent 22%. I was already actively looking for homes and had lost out on a few offers to all cash buyers. I waited them out and at the end they were willing to let me renew for just $100 than I was paying. I found a house and close next week so didn't need to sign another lease. Play hardball with them. They will fold. Apartments in Atlanta are are struggling to find people to pay these inflated rents. Something like 30% of the people in my complex hadn't paid rent in a year due to all the Covid BS. They are desperate for people who will pay. They are trying to rip you off.

My insurance went up 20% and my property taxes are going to do the same, so that's essentially my "rent".

People in Houston would shoot you on the spot for only a 15% increase in their rent.

Sounds reasonable considering the market.

I think he meant he couldn’t set it where he wanted. California has heavy rent control laws

no it isnt - and they wont even if you tried. mine went up almost 200 a month this last renewal. my parents sold their house to move into an apartment, and they toured the one they are in - got the quote. left looked at another place, then went back to sign the lease - and it had gone up 75 bucks in like 45 minutes.

Good luck finding an apartment complex that isn't raising their rent right now. They know that the housing market is nuts and that a lot of people will either temporarily need apartment housing between selling/buying or that people flat cannot obtain a mortgage.
I would simply look around and see what's available rent-wise but with the expectation that theirs will likely also go up in the next 1-2 years.

If it’s a big complex you won’t be able to negotiate. If they did with you they’d have to do it with everyone.
