I've tried these a few times to relieve shin splints and they seem to only make the problem worse.

i have an accessory navicular bone in my foot and I never had pain till I turned 30+, I didn't want to do the surgery bc of the recovery time and the orthotics have solved the problem. They're a lifesaver for me

They are just a crutch.

Gotta strengthen the muscles.

I've actually developed a small arch by switching to minimalist footwear, doing barefoot work, and specific strengthening work.

Can you share those exercises? I'm so flat footed that all my shoes cave to the inside

What brand did you use, or did you do the doctor orders type?

The store bought are crap. Get a prescription and have customs made. Insurance will cover part of the cost of you get the rx. You will thank me.

I'm flat footed and get horrible shin splints. I started running about a month ago, 4.5 miles 5 days a week. I get a good pair of brooks shoes and run on dirt/grass. Running on concrete is a killer

you need to stretch better and work on your stride, landing with a more neutral foot.

how much do you weigh?

you are over pronated with pes planus. You need a running shoe for overpronation, that will provide medial arch support, and also will accomodate a custom fabricated arch support.

Get a MD order for custom orthortics. Take it to a reputable P&O company like Hanger, RedStick, etc. or even a qualified physical therapist can fabricate for you. Podiatrist is an option too, but also expect to pay upwards of $300-400 for a pair of inserts.

Custom fab is the way to go. Can choose the appropriate material, support, etc after being evaluated.
Store bought are primarily for cushion, feel good, but do not provide enough rigidity to support / correct the postural deficit.

those are money, but if you have flat feet I don't think they will be comfortable.

I have orthotics for heel pain. They are amazingly effective. I have 8 pairs of them and have put them in all of my shoes.

I'm flat footed, no arch at all, born that way and it hasn't had any negative effects on my athletic ability that I know of. Ran track and played football in high school, did exceptional on all physical fitness test while in the army, most recently I have had some annoying pain in my knee but I don't attribute it to being flat footed.
