Cub Scouting is about cake bakes, pinewood derby cars, and arts and crafts.

Boy Scouting is about turning a boy into a man. It teaches self reliance, team work, social skills, survival skills, serving others, and basic respect for nature and the outdoors.

I was thinking about getting my son (1st grade) into Cub Scouts, but then decided to just wait until he's eligible for Boy Scouts.

Not all were Eagle scouts, but scouting has a large presence among astronauts.

LINK

"Of the 24 men to travel to the moon on the Apollo 9 through Apollo 17 missions , 21 were Scouts, including 10 of the 12 men who physically walked on the moon's surface, and all three members of the crew of Apollo 13. Three travelled to the Moon twice."

"Of the 312 pilots and scientists selected as astronauts since 1959, at least 207 have been identified as having been Scouts or active in Scouting. The list includes 39 Eagle Scouts"

Scouts meant more back in the day with the astronauts. It's now tainted unfortunately.

Agreed. Cotillion teaches you valuable lessons. Like how to sneak alcohol into underage events.

I agree. Weird kids who have issues fitting in are well served by Scouts. It gives them a chance to be around other weird kids and learn valuable lessons about being a man. They learn to appreciate masculine things but in a different setting. For kids who do not play sports of any kind it is a great way to associate with other boys doing 'non-sport' male stuff like hiking, fishing, camping, etc.. We have it about 6 months when my son was 8 but he always had baseball or football interfere with the meetings and outings. None of his good friends were involved except one and that one doesn't do any extracurricular activities except Scouts.

***** 'weird' is not a fair word to describe a lot of those kids. Some are weird for sure but most are just quiet and not interested in sports which sets them apart from there peers.
