Lightphone

I'm considering getting this as our "home phone" and for kids to take with if they are at a function/practice where it could be useful.

It only calls, texts, plays music/podcasts, and think the new version has a gps feature. It has no internet browser, camera, or email.

I'm not wanting my kids on a smart phone with all those brings.

I don’t have that one but I do have a flip phone that I give my kids should we need them to have a phone. It’s old school hit the numbers to get to the alphabet keypad too.

I hope you're homeschooling them too then. Cause otherwise they'll see everything you want to shield them from

Not sure how old your kids are but it would be horrible for them not to learn how to use email, social media and such. Just put filters and time limits on what they can see.

Not the point. Exposure via that? That will absolutely happen, not debating that.

But more looking at them not having a direct line/phone to access said stuff at any hour. The biggest reason, not making it a habit into them wanting a phone all the time so many, myself included, have been hooked to.

In what world is "learning social media" important or useful?

I’m a big advocate of no phones and teaching kids your values before the values of society. But in that same regard, your kid will be limited if you not that route. Social media usage seems to almost be a prerequisite.

I think it’s dumb that it’s essential, but it still is.

$30/ month? Can’t you get a burner for a lot less?

Seems like it would be hard to pass off to the kids these days with no internet access

Internet for the kids on the family PCs? Where parents can check on what's been viewed and when.

I looked into it significantly and may yet roll that way. For the short term I deleted my browser on my phone and it has been good. Well thanks for the re-deletion reminder, was on the road and reinstalled it.
