My 9 year old nephew had about half of his middle finger amputated when he was a baby... Now that he is older he is becoming more self conscious and realizing a few limitations he has... I'm looking into some awesome 3d printing organizations but also wanted to check with the ever resourceful OT to see if you guys had any hookups/resources that might help me out. He's an awesome kid... TIA

What a waste of money. I could understand the thumb, but half a middle finger?

Have you considered a laser implant so he can point to things with extreme coolness?

Might be worth it for the hole finger.

not to make light of the situation, but that is a ridiculously small impairment. actually, it's probably not even an impairment. he'll get over it

exactly, not going to pay thousands for a medical prosthetic... but a cheap 3d printed finger... or maybe some sort of more affordable option so that he has a way to conceal when he wants to.

I don't see how a 3d printed half finger is going to look even the slightest bit natural.

honestly, never heard of anyone having anything like that...

At that age, I could see where it would make him self conscious, though. Not sure a prosthetic would be any better, though.

Conceal what? The 1/4" smaller middle finger? The kid is nine years old, a 3-D printed nub will really help him blend in among his peers.

naw it wouldn't, it would be more like an ironman finger with some functional improvements...it could definitely provide him with more dexterity or help with certain tasks needing more precision ... I would envision him using something like that "as needed" ...something like this :

Without a DIPJ the prosthesis wouldn't add function. It would actually make it harder to use the hand.

"A" for caring about your nephew....but it's a dumb idea

It's not actually, there are huge charitable organizations solely for this sort of thing ...Large community of folks designing and printing prosthetics for kids all across the world...amazing organization...

You must not remember being 9 years old. The kid in class with the barely noticed short middle finger will soon be known as the much more noticeable robot kid. Nobody wants to hook up with the kid rocking the terminator hand anyways

Both my sons were born without the middle joints in their middle and index fingers. I know that everyone is different but our boys (11, 14) are able to function just fine. Granted, they won't be concert pianist and the younger one who plays baseball has trouble gripping the ball, but as a parent that is dealing with this, I promise you the prosthetic would cause more of a disruption than not.

I have a feeling he won't care about this as much once he's in college.

Yeah....entire limbs for children that would otherwise be severely handicapped. Dude look at the top half of one of your middle fingers and think about what you are asking.

What I hoped to be able to find for him is 2 solutions ... a cheap 3d printed solution to let him try and see if it improved certain tasks for him ... Then of course some sort of cosmetic solution to use as needed ... As the poster above so kindly pointed out, most of the medical solutions though are not worth it.

He'll probably just end up losing it. Tell him to touch a boob and all of the other kids will forget about the finger
