Had a bump pop up on my face just under my nose some time back and didn't think anything of it. Just assumed it was a flesh colored mole. I went to the dermatologist last week and the biopsy showed it's basal cell carcinoma, not really a big deal as far as skin cancer goes.

I'm having it removed via MOHS surgery next week. From what I understand they surgically remove tissue and analyze it under a microscope at the office until they have removed all the cancerous tissue. Anyone else had any experience with this type of procedure? Just concerned about how much tissue they will have to remove since it's been there for a while and I kinda blew it off.

PSA: Wear sunscreen and get any suspicious areas on your skin checked and don't be a dumbass like me.

Yes, I had the same on my ear. Same surgery. They took a big chunk out, then cut a chunk out the back of my ear to replace the chunk. About the size of a quarter. Hurt like a mofo for a week or so. That was last October. Good now.

I've been cut on. Just resign yourself to the fact that it is something that has to be done and your doctor knows how to do it so you won't feel it. I repeated something my grandfather had said to me when he had a worse form of cancer - "You gotta do what you gotta do". Also used some biofeedback relaxation techniques that I use at the dentist.

And thanks for the PSA. Almost 50 percent of men get skin cancer. Dudes, use sunscreen if you are spending any time outdooors. Hunters, golfers, fishermen, even spectators and fans. Do it.

Yep, I went on a rant about using sun screen. Posted about this crap when I had the surgery.

I'm gonna be more aware from now on for sure; especially with my young kids. I don't want them having to go through some unnecessary pain because I'm being neglectful to them as kids.

You're lucky. I started getting annual skin cancer screenings two years ago. No cancer, but I have had a lot of sun exposure over the years between the beach, lake, and snow skiing.

Yes I have had numerous places frozen and cut on. I have an appointment in March for MOHS surgery in BR.
Wear sunscreen and kid those kids out of the sun.

My wife has. She's very white, never got into the laying out to get a tan when she was young.

That was about 20 years ago, hasn't had a recurrence. Has about a 4 inch scar on her back from where they carved it out.

She gets on to me all the time because I never use sunscreen, even though I used to play golf 6-7 days a week.

Course I'm naturally red

Yeah, three basal cells cut out so far and many pre-cancers frozen with liquid nitrogen. Next week the dermatologist is going to do a chemical peel on my face and head since he's seeing a lot of small pre-cancers. It involves coating the skin with an acid that kills the top layers of the skin. You end up looking and feeling like you've had a terrible sunburn.

I spent a lot of time fishing, golfing, running and rarely wore sunscreen or a hat. Paying the price now.

I have had MOHS on forehead, nose and near mouth. Not fun. You will be bandaged up, hiding in your house like the Elephant Man for a week or two, but in a year you won't notice the scar.

Yep. 35 years old and had it done 3x.

First time I had a plastic surgeon put me under to get basal cell off base of neck. It was deep and i have a large scar from it (if a plastic had not done it I would have a sunken spot where it was taken out)

Second was on collarbone area and the derm got it with a punch biopsy. That scar looks like I got shot.

Third was on forearm and dermatologist cut it out.

All basal cells. The one on neck hurt like hell. I had to re-stretch skin on my neck because of the slice taken out and then tension when sutured.

I had a stage 0 melanoma removed from my arm last year. Of course, I now wear sunscreen daily. One other thing I'd recommend is one of those white nylon long-sleeved shirts to wear while swimming or boating. I got one from Academy.

My wife had a similar situation in her left ear. Weird. MOHS was performed and she had a good bit of tissue removed because it went undiagnosed for some time. Her GP continued to treat it as an infection. And, she was stubborn and didn't go to her dermatologist for some time.

Her surgeon did exactly what you described. Shaved and shaved until pathology was negative. You cannot tell she had the surgery.

And yes, cover up and use sunscreen!

Pretty much this. I wear a long sleeve nylon fishing shirt and a big hat when out in the boat. I look like a Star Wars sand person but it beats the hell out of getting cut on.

I work in dermatology and could possibly answer questions for you if you had any. Hopefully they were all answered for you already. Wear your sunscreen and get your annual full body skin exam people!!!

Wife's uncle had the bad kind, and they just cut it off, and watch him like a hawk. This was 4-5 years ago. He is a pasty white dude that played golf all the time. Cancer popped up on his bald head.

Like others in this thread, I've had MOHS multiple times. None of the surgeries hurt or caused pain but one was by a blood vessel in my temple and I bled like a stuck pig when the surgeon nicked it. There were two bad parts - they finish a round of shaving and then have you wait all bandaged up until they can say whether they got it all. If not, you go back and they repeat the procedure until they're satisfied. The other bad part was hiding out for a while with bandages on my face.

Basal cell is not bad but it is a red flag. Whether the dermatologist recommends it or not, ask to schedule full body scans every 6 months. When you go to the scans, tell the examiner that you want them to be very cautious and remove anything that they have doubts about.

I definitely take precautions in the sun now but my first MOHS surgeon, who was one of the earliest adopters of the process in DFW, basically said that these things are from damage that was done 30 years ago. So make sure to protect your kids too.
