HAS to get a master's degree. If he loves geology then he won't mind doing it.

Pretty much this. Known many geologists and all are strange. Some are very cool, but all are strange and at least have a mustache.

I took a Geology course in college. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

With the right company in exploration and borehole seismology you can start out right around 100k/yr.

Average in these fields is closer to 80 though.

Negative. I have 1 mineral; olivine. Only reason I have that is because I've never see seen a sample come close to its clarity.

It's so funny. Neither I or either of my uncles have a lick of facial hair.

Depends on what they're doing, but anywhere from 80-100+ to start.

Some companies will rotate their young PE's around their different engineering groups for the first few years to get them well rounded experience.

ETA: reservoir, drilling, operations, completions, etc

If y'all didn't hear, The Univeristy of Louisiana at Lafayette just won the Imperial Barrel award for the second time in 3 years.

It's being noted that currently, ULL has the best geology program in the US, and arguably the world.

Interesting. Not enough to move my family. I would be all over that if I was just out of school.

It might not be as hard if you already have a B.S. degree from another school and want to get into their geo masters program.

Not hardly. The enrollment is currently larger than they've ever had, but as long as you get into ULL and keep your grades up, you're golden. It's underfunded, but they have some bright doctors working in that department. Ones that left Texas and LSU to bring ULL to the next level. Which it looks like they've done.

I work for a large company, and the oil industry is pulling all the talent from us right now. They're paying almost double than what we are. I like it. Hope it inflates my pay grade.
