Some Houses in Kenner that flooded during Katrina because the freakin Jefferson Parish President sent pump operators out of town had to be raised and they look ridiculous. These areas never flooded before but FEMA made them do it anyway.

I just looked. I can't find anything in the constitution that requires people to modify their property to protect against flooding. Fortunately, the easiest way to protest big government would be to decline any financial assistance it may offer you.

I wasnt there because i didnt flood but some friends were and they said there were alot of pissed off people in there.
From what i was told, if home was more than 50% damaged and you are below base elevation....raise

HMGP money will come and between that and some local skin, the costs will be borne by the FedGov in many instances. Not all but some.
You can elevate. You can be bought out. You can flood proof.
Almost every Parish in South Louisiana has been doing these projects for over a decade. This will increase the grant program's availability in the most impacted areas.
Jefferson Parish has elevated many hundreds of homes and has aggressively pursued-and received-grant money for this purpose. They are not always ridiculous and silly as some state. They are also much, much more heavily urban/suburban than that of the more intensely impacted parishes from this disaster.
More details to come in the following months.

So...a $300,000 house (assuming it was in AE zone) would need $150,000 in damages for it to require elevation?

Id love to know if this new flood creates the new base flood elevation (bfe)...if so thats kinda crazy
