I've got 1200 square feet of cedar fence to stain. Got a quote for $900 from a fence staining company. frick that! I figure I need about 8-9 gallons of stain.

Is a pump sprayer sufficient or should I rent a commercial sprayer?

Commercial sprayer but be sure to tell them what you are using it for so they give you the correct nozzle/head. Pump sprayer will look like crap once the stain sets.

And pick a day when the wind is down. My dickhead ex neighbor had to repaint the side of my house because of this.

I stained mine a year or so ago. $900 quote doesn't surprise me at all, as it is gonna take a hell of a lot of stain. Fwiw, the best way to do it is to buy a pump garden sprayer to spray the stain on and then immediately even it out with a brush. They sell a special sprayer at Lowes/HD for about ten bucks. The sprayer that they sell specifically for this is basically disposable and also does not stop up nearly as often as a regular sprayer.

if you have more questions, just ask.

Do you not like the natural, weathered grayish color of cedar? I do...and actually dislike most stained colors on cedar. You don't need to stain cedar for protection like others woods.

pump sprayer. a quality stain will run 150-200 per 5 gallons and mines lasted 7 years so far no problems.

approx 1600 sq ft (8ft by 200) took me an afternoon.

Get a full body disposable painter suit, gloves, full face protection, googles, etc. All cheap at big box or SW/etc

Second renting a commercial paint sprayer. You will do it so much faster.

Pump sprayer and roller is all I used.

A professional sprayer would be faster though.

Use and an airless sprayer and backroll it with a roller. Use an oil based product.

Don't use stain.

Use diesel

It'll last forever. Just don't get caught.

I'm serious. Old farmer I worked with used it. All his wooden fences and shite looked great.

I did a paint matched stain years ago. Did it with a brush. Took a while but came out real nice. No runs or streaks.

I used an electric airless sprayer on part of mine and that damn thing went through stain at an alarming rate. Then I used a good ole paint roller and used half the amount of stain with a better looking result.
