It's really kind of dumb.

Because they are players too.

Edit: at least in professional baseball anyway.

Its an extremely dumb tradition that started long ago. Used to bug me alot more than it does now, but still just as stupid.

I saw a picture on facebook the other day of a travel ball coach in full uni as well. Pants, jersey and turf shoes.

I believe there is some rule that says they can actually go out to bat in extreme situations. Basically the entire team, including everyone in the bullpen, has to be injured.

Just tradition I guess. Better question would be how that got started. However, yes I agree, it is dumb. Some 60 year old guy out there wearing a uniform looks ridiculous.

Football should be the same.

George Carlin has a good bit about this.

This if because they are the only coaches that are technically allowed to enter the field of play.

In the past, there were occasionally an individual who was both player and manager or coach. Rogers Hornsby (1920s - 1930s) is one Hall of Famer who comes to mind. LINK

the requirement is written into the rules for boys' baseball in a lot of places. I'm just glad the calf length baseball pants and stirrups have gone out of style/tradition.

Those old legs...

Give me some Connie Mack wearing a suit. Soccer coaches wear unis for the most part.

Pete "I didn't bet on baseball" Rose was another, although he is not in the HoF.

I had to wear the full uni when my team made the World Series. Babe Ruth makes the coaches wear the uniform for state, regional and World Series tourneys. I never liked it.

There was a guy years ago who used to wear one. I can't recall who it was though. Before my time, but I've seen pics.
