Watched an episode of Air Disasters yesterday and wondered how often that happens.

Not since I started doing my own maintenance.

Back in 2012, working offshore...
I was on the first flight out. Pilot takes off and has to make an emergency landing 2 minutes after takeoff
No fuel in the chopper...
How do you not check this?
It's on the "before takeoff checklist"

i remember when i was taking an aviation class at NLU and learned about this.
thought it was the coolest thing ever; thought if a helicopter lost power you pretty much just died.
the autorotation thing was the coolest thing i'd ever heard of.

Once working offshore. Kind of a wild ride. Put you into a downward glide/dive and then crank back at the last second and let the rotor become the brakes.
Never want to do that again!!!

I watched a guy flying an autogyro yesterday. So he was autorotating all over the place.

yeah what sucks is when they flare about 2 or 3 seconds too soon.
Talk about HARD landings.

I read a book written by a Huey pilot in Vietnam. He said during training their pilots would cut power on you and it was up to you to figure it out. He talked about having to quickly find a spot to land and looking out for power lines and shite like that. Stuff like that is probably why those guys were so damn good by the time they shipped over to 'Nam.

My Dad has (he was a helicopter pilot in Korea and Vietnam).

And they were ten times better when they came home.

Seen it from the ground, but not on board.

Worked on helicopters for years. Did it regularly.
Every time a main rotor blade is changed auto rotation is done. You have to set the main rotor rotation speed. Can't be too fast or slow. Go up, auto rotate down checking RPMS. Land, adjust the links, do it again until the RPMS are correct. Never did like or get used to it.

I've always wanted to learn to fly one of those.

Helicopters don't fly, They beat the air into submission.

I used to fly in the S92s when I worked offshore for BP. I always wondered what it would be like to auto rotate in a bird that big with 18 passengers on board.
