I'm thinking about becoming one. I like how it is a mobile job and is not tedious. It seems exhilarating. Do it or stay the hell away? Thanks.

Enjoy giving narcan

Seriously though, my 2 friends that started as paramedics went onto become nurses. You get sent on shitty retrieval jobs to terrible places. Nurses at least are in 1 place and don’t have to go into peoples homes.

It's exhilarating at first I'm sure but after a while it won't be.

It's literally mobile, yes. But you don't have much freedom of movement. In a busy city you're basically on the truck, off the truck, on the truck, at the hospital, on the truck, off the truck, on the truck, at the hospital ad infinitum. It's not like you can just go wherever and do whatever you want when not running a call.

I believe the new slogan for paramedics is “Uber for medicine”

If you want a 8 year career, back pain and memories burned in your brain the rest of your life for shite money....sure. You will be Capt saveahoe for about 4 years, the next 2 you will try to survive and the final 2 you will be burning your brain on how to gtfo of this meatwagon. Good Luck and go to PA school!

For every grateful normal person you help, there will be 10 dirtbags.

It doesn’t pay enough for the work and training you need.

Look forward to transporting leeches who call 911 so that they don't have to wait in the ER lobby.

I know a few firefighters who are also EMTs...they seem to like the variety.

You better have an exit strategy. You make a career out of it and your gonna end up close to 60 with a bad back/knees/shoulders/etc still working long shifts day/night with a nest egg built on just above minimum wage. Plus some pretty messed up images to keep in the back of your mind.

Some paramedics are absolutely worthless, but I can't begin to tell you the respect I have for the ones who you can tell are truly striving to be great paramedics

I’m a medic, best thing to do is get on a fire dept after getting your medic. There are several fire departments that run the ambulance. Shreveport, Bossier, Ruston to name a few. You can do the fire fighting also but if you aren’t into that than just get on a private service. You get your medic and you’ll pretty much be able to get on any private service you want, it won’t guarantee a spot on a fire department though.

Every company is different regarding hours. Some work 12 hour shifts, some do 24 on and 48 off, some do like 48/96. I don’t know much about private companies tbh, but I personally love the ambulance even though you do get burnt out at times. Some shifts I’m on fire truck or rescue and others ambulance. My unit probably averages 10-12 runs in a 24 hour shift.

If you get good training you will be fine, good bed side manner is important. Pay just depends on where you work. You are probably looking at making 300-400 $ per 24 hour shift but it varies widely. You’d have to get your emt first, get anatomy and physiology 1 and 2, medic class is 1-1.5 years depending on program. Good luck

I have to thrive on positivity. I couldn't see all the negative things an EMT would have to see everyday. Just wouldn't choose to be a EMT. Not for your boy.

I have a cousin that did it the hard way. Got training to be an EMT, did for a few years, and then went back to school part time and got a pre med degree. Student loaned his way through LSU med school. Specialized in orthopedics, and now is an ortho surgeon.

This. Don't do it. I regret ever doing it, it takes a special person to handle all the shite you deal with. I only did it for 5 years and I regret it every day.

Working the truck is ok at first. Gets old. But it can lead to some good opportunities. I work Rescue now and I like it alot more than the truck, even though it's not as much medical response involved.
