wiki says

quote:

n the future, an oligarchy of television networks rules the world. Even the government functions primarily as a puppet of the network executives, serving mainly to pass laws — such as banning "off" switches on televisions — that protect and consolidate the networks' power. Television technology has advanced to the point that viewers' physical movements and thoughts can be monitored through their television sets. Almost all non-television technology has been discontinued or destroyed. The only real check on the power of the networks is Edison Carter, a crusading investigative journalist who regularly exposes the unethical practices of his own employer, and the team of allies both inside and outside the system who assist him in getting his reports to air and protecting him from the forces that wish to silence or kill him.

Mid 80s I got a Max Headroom T-Shirt and 50 cents in Coke can from a Coke vending machine.

I remember that somebody in Chicago hacked into the Chicago Bears local broadcast with a Max Headroom impersonation (guy wearing a head mask and teeter totting Venetian blind backdrop). Made national news. Chi locals were all fired up. Funny as shite. Don't know if they caught the guys or not.

I was just curious if there was some deeper or symbolic reasoning behind it. I mean, it was a prank. Why is this considered such a big thing?

Why was Tron considered a big thing? It was new fangled computer graphics wizardry we hadn't seen before and Max Headroom was a quirky enough character to get multiple short lived TV shows in the UK and US.

You have to remember that what seems like primitive tech today was cutting edge at one time. How laughably bad is the Dire Straits Money for Nothing video now?

But as silly as it looks now that was new and edgy enough to make a music video back then.

Fun fact, that is Jim Carrey.

I started this thread like 10 years ago.

And yes I know that's not true, before y'all get all riled up.
It was a rumor back in the day.
