Anybody move back to Baton Rouge in your late 40’s/early 50’s?

We moved 15 years ago up to NOVA/Dc and while it was cool at first, I absolutely hate it now. The people are fake, there’s not even a scent of culture here (as nobody is from here), the food sucks etc etc etc.
The main reason I’m sticking around is I make a very good living here, have a very nice house and two kids that are 11 and 7. I call this Disney World north as there’s little to no crime outside of DC, the median income is well north of 6 figures and just nothing truly that bad happens here. No first world problems at all. My kids know no other way of life so I have to remind them daily that this isn’t the real world and it will all change for them someday when they go off to college or move themselves.
All of our true friends and family are back in NOLA/Baton Rouge. Every time we go home I get the itch more and more to make the jump back to Baton Rouge. My wife (from Baton Rouge) says the itch is just the dose of good food I got and it will go away with time.
I know I’m about to get landblasted about the crime, poor schools and the list goes on and on, but have any of you older folks with kids (particularly LSU alums) return to Baton Rouge later in life and did you end up regretting it or glad made the move back.
I just think life could slow down some moving out of this rat race. Kids are already in catholic school here so no additional cost there and there might even be an option to keep my job here and remote work.

No. The future of Louisiana is Ponchatoula.

I decided not to. And at times I regret that, Baton Rouge does have a lot that I miss. But mostly I think I made the right choice.

What ultimately made you decide not to?

Just keep in mind it is not the Baton Rouge you left

100% agree and as mentioned, understand the increased crime element etc etc. I will say that’s just about at the top of my list as to why I shouldn’t come back. Just trying to see if the pros of coming back outweigh that at all.

You will be miserable and suicidal if you move back. Its not the way it was when you were here and once you have lived in the civilized world you cant go back.

The Baton Rouge you remember is not the Baton Rouge of today. BR is a death spiral for a city, the whole state is mismanaged and over taxed. Maybe if you like burbs but the cities are crap now.

There are almost no pros to returning.

Better to visit Louisiana than to live in Louisiana. Lived in south La 30+ years and now in my early 40’s. No desire to move back.
I get homesick when I visit for fun stuff but shake my head when I hear stories from my brother about sewerage and water board admitting fault of a clogged line and not fixing it for 2+ months.
Imagine leaving pleasantville to return back to Louisiana and washing clothes at a laundromat bc of others’ incompetence.

No surprise answers thus far!
Pros in my view are slowing down life, much lower cost of living, having our kids be around their family that they never get to see (particularly aging grandparents), LSU Sports again and taking my kids to the events (too far away to really attend games now), the food of course, and being back closer to true friends.

Do it. The OT makes shite sound so much worse than it is.
The crime and traffic do suck in parts of Baton Rouge. But you can live 35 minutes outside of the city in towns like like St Francisville or St Amant. You'll feel like you're in the country with a big yard and low crime but still enjoy all the things you miss about the area.

Yea if I truly lived by the OT and what is said here, you’d think that south Louisiana is the equivalent of a 3rd world country with dictators and drug lords chopping off peoples heads left and right.
About what I expected though - that’s why I asked for the late 40’s/early 50 year olds to answer.

All valid points.
But don’t move back for LSU sports. Things are different than they used to be. Tailgating ain’t what it used to be. The experience on Tv is way better than before. Plus, Tigers are traveling more. I’ve found it’s more fun to catch a game in LA and experience a new atmosphere than to return home and have my memories forever jaded.
Family is a concern that there is no good answer. Hopefully your high paying job allows for more travel funds to visit or them visit you. It does for me. And despite the hate modern technology gets on this board, FaceTime with the grandparents goes a long way.
I would never consider moving back to Louisiana while I’m still in the workforce unless an unforeseen family situation that needed my attention.

Don’t confuse your memories with reality.
Most of the wonderful things you remember is because of your immediate family.
You are making those memories with your kids now where you are.
You can cook, go to events, and build friendships anywhere.
Most people work their whole lives to get out of Louisiana and give their kids a better life and better opportunities.
It would be hard to undo all of that based on nostalgia.
The schools are worse (even private), the town is one of the most dangerous per capital in the country, and traffic sucks.
Trust your wife. Enjoy your life.

Bullllllllshit. When did you start tailgating?
It's better than it was in the 90s that's for sure. But if you were a student between 2003-2007 then yea it's not as wild on a weekly basis. But big games are still HUGE tailgating weekends.

I would move back to Pineville in a heartbeat.
I don’t want to insult BR, but it just isn’t for me.
