Just got back from visiting relatives in the Northern Virginia/Washington DC area. Had not been up there in a long time, and really enjoyed the area while I was up there. A lot of history and beautiful landscape, and the economy seems to be going pretty strong.

Anybody live or have lived in this part of the country?

NOVA has nearly ruined the rest of the State of Virginia.

I say this as having been born and raised in Virginia.

I lived there from 00-02. It was great but the luster wore off for me when the economy tanked

My kids is moving into Arlington next month and working in McLean. He's excited about it. The area looks great for young 20-somethings

Son moved their this summer to go to grad school at American University. Wife and I have visited 3 times and are totally in love with the place. Fortunately he will be taking a job with a firm in Tysons Corner once he completes his program, so we will get to visit the area more. I personally love the place but when your living experiences consist of SE Louisiana, it doesn’t take much to impress me. I will say the cost of living for the area and tuition are hitting my check book pretty hard compared to when he was living in BR. Went up a couple of weeks ago and spent the weekend in Shenandoah. Another beautiful place.

NOVA is beautiful, but it is ultra-liberal and expensive as hell. I could manage the expensive aspect of it, but their politics are an extension of DC, which is awful.

They vote blue and are nothing more than DC South.

It's the same way Portland dominates Oregon politics.

I lived in Falls Church and McLean for years. I'll miss the great Asian restaurants, but I won't miss the crippling traffic and low-key race wars that constantly rage on.

I've lived in NOVA for the past 8 years. It's a great place to live. Low crime, highly educated population, strong economy, and lots to do in the immediate area and within an hour drive. Traffic is a nightmare and the cost of living is high (not the Bay Area or New York, but not good). It's getting pretty sprawling now also all the way out to Purcellville.

bullshite. Richmond and the 7 Cities would all still be shite with a red NOVA. The mountains, northern neck and Delmarva are all fine places regardless of northern politics.

Great Falls, Langley, and the George Washington Parkway, yes?

But to me NOVA is gridlock, subdivisions, and strip malls. A people without a culture, living in a plastic world.

I live in northern VA. Been here for about 5 years (Burke then Stafford).

While there are better options than Stafford (depending on what you’re looking for), I love the area, in general.

My 7 year old said he likes Virginia more than Louisiana because Virginia takes the seasons seriously. The are four distinct seasons. The leaves right now are incredible. It snows 3-5 times per year where I’m at (more in the mountains), Spring has cherry blossoms and comes right when you’re over the 3 months of winter, Summer can be oppressive at times but it’s short and a solid 4 months to spend at the pool.

Aside from traffic (which with telework is much less of an issue) and the cost of real estate, it’s a great place. Within 2 hours of mountains, 2 hours of the beach (4 hours for great NC beaches).

The vineyard, craft brew, distillery, and cidery scene has blown up over the past 10 years. A ton of great options within 2 hours.

A lot of history from north of DC all the way to Jamestown. Williamsburg and Jamestown are great visits. More than 3 dozen Civil War battlefields across the area (from Gettysburg, Bull Run, Chancellorsville, and Fredericksburg).

Richmond, Virginia Beach, Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, Fredericksburg, all have perks for the cities they are. DC is great in terms of history. . . Though I wouldn’t live there.

And Richmond, DC, Charlottesville get big name artists for concerts.

Also, it’s 3.5 hours to Philly, 4.5 hours to NYC and 7 or so hours to New England.

Roads and schools are also some of the best.

Thought this would be a 3 year stop. But could see sticking around a while.

Most weekends, even after 5 years, i feel like I’m on vacation and never run out of something new to do.
