Just curious.

The thread about office jobs got me thinking. Has anybody here ever just up and quit an unfulfilling job to go off and try something else?

I imagine I'll do it one day, grab my shite and head for the mountains and just sell firewood on the side of the road for the rest of my life.

A terrible job that pays money is better than no job that doesn't.

Thought about it for a second, then thought "frick being unemployed for any amount of time."

I had a horrible boss at a school in BR. She told me, during class in front of my students, that she had a stack of resumes on her desk of people who wanted my job. I tossed her the keys and told her she could start interviewing. It felt amazing.

Nope. I've had the privilege of working for some really good people that give me a lot of freedom.

Oh and I get a metric ton of holidays a year

Yep, told the owner of the company I worked for that I would have to stop travelling as much as I was (leave Sunday afternoon, return Friday night for 2 years) because the wife was finally pregnant (tried for 8 years and had an adoption fall through). He said you can either have a family or have a job. I threw my keys on his desk and walked out. Best part is he followed me out the door asking if we could work something out, I didn't acknowledge him and kept walking. Felt great and I've advanced my career by light years after I realized how much he was holding me back.
The people I work for now are great people and value family time as much as work. Take as much time off as you want as long as my projects are on time and budget and Fridays off every other week.
Oh, and almost double the $.

Yes, twice.

One was just working at Papa Johns during college, so whatever... it's not like that was going on my resume.

The other was a company that I just wasn't happy working for. I didn't have anything else lined up, but I still landed on my feet.

I quit a job without another job once. Of course, I didn't walk off the job one day, I gave a month's notice and left on a reasonable terms as possible. Our managing partner and I had some irreconcilable differences, and I just wasn't comfortable with the professional risk I took by remaining with the firm.

It was unfulfilling, and I did end up with a much more fulfilling job after, but I don't think I'd do it for that reason alone.

I'd love to go back to grad school fulltime, but the idea of being out of a fulltime job for multiple years scares to crap out of me.
