Thinking about getting one for Christmas...I've had black, yellow and chocolate over the years, but have heard wonderful things about silver Labradors.

what have you heard?
1st. They are not recognized by ckc
2nd they are registered as chocolate labs
3rd they have recessive genes which i would be very careful with when getting one

Beautiful dogs and im not trying to talk you out of it. Just going to relay a few things i know

Who cares if they're not going to be in a dog show?

Not sure why this would be an issue

Definitely a concern.

like i said not trying to talk you out of em. I wanted one myself, beautiful dogs. Just do your research. The main thing that scared me away is recessive genes that could cause more health problems than a normal lab. Have hips and everything certified by owner if you get one as well as any other health issues.

Didn't know all that. But I know a guy who has one, and I agree, it is a beautiful dog. It's eyes are gray/silver and really stands out.

Friend of mine has one. It was her first dog and it was kind of crazy as a puppy but I think some of that was my friend being a rookie dog owner. Chewed up some of the kitchen floor and a few spots on the walls but after that first year she has really chilled out and been a good dog.

I had a silver lab. I had to put here down before she was 2 years old. She stayed sick. The vets never could tell me what exactly was wrong with her. She became so weak she couldnt stand up and her kidneys shut down.

After I put her down I contacted the breeder to ask if he had ever had that problem before and all he said was "no". He never replied to anymore of my emails.

A fellow hunting buddy had one, good looking dog but terrible at huntin . Although that could all be within the training. I've worked with a field trial trainer and have seen 100s of dogs over the last 8 yrs. None have been a silver.
If you're looking for a companion dog I think its fine, I wouldn't choose one for hunting or competition if thats your idea.

exactly what scared me off with the recessive genes. The cost for those "silver" labs didnt outweigh the risk for me. I had a black lab while i was looking "also found during my research these have best health".. i ended up getting 2 more labs... yeller ones

Or you could go get one of the thousands of dogs that will be killed this month in a shelter that won't have a tenth of the health problems a full blooded will have.

My dad has owned every color lab their is and the best was a black female we gave $100 for. My silver lab, which I gave $1000 for as a puppy, was by far the prettiest and she was really smart just couldn't keep her healthy.
