They aren't all AWD. X5 has a RWD model. CR-V has the same option

Buying a 10-12 year BMW that is known for many problems with high repair costs = not a good way to spend your hard earned money.

I guess you're entitled to your opinion, but there is nothing similar about these two vehicles except somewhat similar dimensions.

CRVs are front wheel drive. And I've never heard of a rwd x5. The X is for awd, as in a 335xi is awd, a 335i isn't.

I've never seen a rwd CRV either.

You can get rwd X5s. The X in this regard just means the SUV line.

My wife had a 2011 CRV with leather for two years, my dad is on his 4th or 5th X5. I believe you can get a CRV with a V6, but the I6 in the X5 is a lot peppier. The BMW drives and handles much better than the CRV IMO.

My wife's CRV was very nice indeed, but it drove like poo.

I drove one for two years. I'm just saying, I had a 2012 and it drove awesome. The 2011 x5 I drove was about the same IMO.

My dad's X5s were/are all AWD. I've never shopped for one.

Well, I don't really know what else to tell you. You apparently are unconcerned with the driving experience, and that's fine.

I rather just buy a CR-V for 1/3 of the cost. Same thing, equal

What's a driving experience? Unless you're going Ricky Bobby fast it's all pretty much the same thing IMO

I had to read this like 6 times to get thru the sentence. I know what you're saying, just talking about reading the entire sentence.

X5 is much tighter, handles better, drives better. Both are nice cars, just a CRV =/= X5.

Well, it's not this one.

I wouldn't buy a recent X5, much less an 02-05. My BMW obsessed friend advised us all against the X5, and they're regularly noted for reliability issues. I looked at them hard, but nearly every person I talked to advised me to look elsewhere.

Girl I know got a 2012 X5 about 2 months ago from Carmax, which was a disaster. Swapped it for a 2014 Jeep GC Limited, and couldn't be happier.

I have a 2011 X5 and it is an awesome driving car and hauls arse. That being said, it's had issues. A couple of months ago the drive shaft broke and destroyed the oil pan. Previously the car wouldn't shut off. Wife had to drive it to the dealer for them to shut it off. Something wrong with the igition switch. It's still under warranty, plus we purchased an extended warranty. A must for a BMW.

It depends on what you want. I get into it with my Lexus loving GF all the time about why anyone would drive european vehicles over the relative ease of luxury asian makers.

For example, in my anecdote about the girl who got the X5, she should have never gotten one. To justify what you're going to put up with, you have to either just love everything unique to the X5, or you have to have some interest in performance. Otherwise, just get an MDX (or another nice SUV/crossover). Although the MDX is a pretty nice all around compromise, FWIW.

I think it is fair to put the X5 in a similar category as Land Rovers, though with different (and perhaps less severe) faults and different attributes. But I'd never recommend either for someone looking for a luxury SUV who cares nothing about off road capability or some other performance aspect.
