Any sinusitis/rhinitis/upper respiratory docs out there? What can’t I mix?

So I’m fighting a bit of a sinus situation that started off as a drip, which then led to a rather horrendous cough. Luckily I have a cabinet full of meds thanks to my kids randomly getting school bugs. But now, I’m having some trouble finding out about interactions between them.

I have 1200mg musincex that I’m doing morning and night, plus a Zyrtec, plus Sudafed (the good kind they make you buy behind the counter).

Now - cough syrup. If I take robatussin with these meds, will I die? I also have some Bromfed and Chlohist. Would either of these be better? Or should I avoid them altogether?

Thanks in advance. And in b4 AIDS or HIV or Aggie jokes.

That’s a concoction there bud. I think that’s the secret gay sauce, actually. You’re still gonna be welcome here anytime, though.

Not sure on what you’re mixing and any potential reactions, but get the Neil Med Sinus flush. The one with the bottle, it will help flush that shite out.

Could add in a Claritin or Allegra for a couple of days to really knock that mucus/Drainage out in case the Zyrtec doesn’t do much ( which it has lost a lot of effectiveness for me personally )

Otherwise it’s a revolving door or mucus drip that is irritating and also irritating the throat as well .

Check with kind of robitissin you have .. if it’s the one with Guafenisin, well you’re already taking the same ingredient with the mucinex. No need to double dip there as that just breaks it loose from your chest to help get it out, which doesn’t really sound like your problem anyway from your OP.

If you have the one with dextromethorphan, then yeah you could add that on if your cough persists

I’m no pharmacist, but it sounds like you have made yourself a homemade version of NyQuil!

Robitussin is just more Mucinex. Looks like you’ve got plenty already. Bromfed and Chlorohist are just more Zyrtec so don’t need that either. Sudafed is good. Honestly you’ve got it covered. Maybe add a Benadryl at night to help sleep and dry you up a bit while you do.

Medscape drug interaction checker is your friend baw, especially when you have sinus junk going on, and if you already take non-related prescription meds.

If it’s the tail-end of a cold, sounds like you’ve got chest congestion and a cough. The 1200mg of mucinex (guaifenesin) will help the chest congestion, but drinking plenty of water to break up the phlegm will help more. For the cough, use the Bromfed. The Robitussin you have has guaifenesin in it already… so you’d be double dosing there. I like Delsym for cough.

Interestingly enough, my head/nose isn’t stopped up (other than the constant clear colored drip). It’s my chest that’s hurting so bad, and that’s mostly because of the brutal cough.

Percocet to make you think you feel better and Xanax to make you pass out
Rinse repeat until your sniffles are gone

That’s what I was leaning to. But I couldn’t find any drug interaction info between it and Sudafed. Are they all ok together?

Take whatever combo you want, but realize anything that crosses over is subject to the same singular limits (ie- once you’ve taken the max dose of Sudafed, you shouldn’t take any bromfed, which contains Sudafed)

Also note:
Brompheramine, dexbrompheramine, and cetirizine are all antihistamines. While you can make the argument that you can take once daily cetirizine plus the max dose of one of these other two (on the bottle), you can’t take the max dose of both of these. Overdoing antihistamines can get pretty nasty, but the vast majority of people tolerate them pretty well (thus the suggestion that it may be fine to take a daily cetirizine along with the q6h antihistamine of your choice. Cetirizine is a little unique. It sort of bridges the gap between “old” and “new” antihistamines. It has more drowsy potential (and, arguably, more “snot-drying” potential as well) than Claritin, Allegra (and is basically the same medication (by active form) as xyzal), thus the risk for interaction with the brompheramine and its analogues is a bit higher, but it’s not in the “definitely don’t do that” category.

The first question is simple.
Are you running a fever?
If so, you might need an antibiotic.
If not, a quick shot of Celestine will dry you up and have you feeling great.

No, I’m not a dr but I play one on tv!

I find the best combo for me when fighting a respiratory cold is:

Claritin - antihistamine for any allergies contributing to congestion
Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) - the 4 hours from behind the counter for sinus decongestion
Flonase - nasal decongestion
Mucinex - for chest decongestion
Delsym - for cough (at night, can cause drowsiness)
Advil/Tylenol - for any pain

Much better than the cold and flu combos where they throw some of those ingredients in but not all and use the dumb form of sudafed (phenylephrine).

Am I missing any component?
