Do you need the school to work the job? No. But it will get you in the door. I've been in operations for 4 years and got in with no experience and nothing but a bachelors degree in business. If I applied to my same job today I wouldnt even be selected through the interview screening. Everyone we've hired the last year or so either knew someone or just finished up their ptec degree. It will be worth your time and money to get it if operations is your career of choice.

I got an interview at my plant by having a 4 year degree.
We require a 4 year degree, ptec, or 4 years plant experience. Try getting on with Turner or SGS and make some connections.
*Before you think you want to be an operator though, I would get a job working shift work and see if you can do it. Some people can't stand the weekends, holidays, and switching from days to nights. Also I'm at 600ish hours of overtime, so factor that in as well. There is definitely going to be things you will miss out on because of work. But with the pay, 401k, and pension, it makes up for a lot of it to me. I still question whether I want to do it sometimes when I have to miss Christmas with the kids, or birthdays, etc. but you can plan around most things. Hope this helps.
