...or civilians? I was an MP there from September 1996 to December 1997.

What are your fondest memories?

Careful, that's quite a brag, Stolen Valor will be fact-checking.

Please supply pertinent corroborative information.

I've been to Barstow. I can only think leaving Barstow for the last time would be my fondest memory of Barstow.

PS: Thanks for your service.

Did a bunch of CAXs (combined arms exercise) in 29 Palms. The entire area is horrible. So glad I wasn't stationed there.

Let's face it, there aren't many US military installations that are located in places that most people would like to reside. In fact, most are located in some fairly undesirable places.

If you want sweet duty stations, join the Coast Guard. Some primo locations, and almost all in the US.

Yes, I agree, but even the Coast Guard have had some austere postings. One I remember hearing about was a remote very small island that was some kind of radio relay station. The only human inhabitants on the island were a few Coast Guardspersons.

I used to work with a guy who was stationed at Shemya in the Aleutians with the Air Force. The wind blew all the time, there were no trees, no wildlife except some kind of small gopher like mammal, and no leisure activity except drinking or hiking-if you didn't get too close to the water, because rogue waves would come up and wash you away. This was during the sixties, and he said guys would volunteer for Vietnam to get away from the place.

One time a civilian airliner made an emergency landing, and they had to post guards to keep guys from rushing the plane to see a woman.

I was stationed in Orlando for 2 years.

I'm sure those who go through flight training in the USN don't complain about Pensacola, and Key West NAS isn't bad if you don't mind the gheys in the area.

While not directly stationed at Barstow I have been stationed at 29 Palms a bunch both at CAX and with STA 1/7 so I have been to Barstow before. It sux. My first experience with 29 Palms was a training exercise when I was a boot with Kilo company, 3/2. Our unit left Lcpl Jason Rother in the desert and didn't report it until 2 days later. He was likely already dead by then. Several court martials over that ordeal.

Never stationed there but been through a hundred times. Was lucky enough to pick my orders and spent my entire Naval career in San Diego Miramar. Back in the f-14 days, before it became a marine base. Fighter Town USA.. Felix Rules..IYAOYAS

I would've loved to have been stationed there. The immediate area sucks but you could go to San Diego/Los Angeles/Vegas every weekend.
Did an RCAX in the summer of 05 and loved the weather.

You're crazy! I get what you're saying but being stationed at camp pendleton affords you the same places. Don't forget about Lake Havasu and big bear too!
