I've been looking at some hotels but this will be my first trip so I'm not sure where (area) to stay.

We are going to be doing the obvious Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Times Square, 9/11 memorial, etc.........

I'm not familiar with subways or taxis. Yeah yeah I know dumbass but I've always drove and walked everywhere never needed public transportation.

Hyatt Union Square is affordable and nice. Awesome location; easy walk to the Village, SOHO, Tribeca, great shopping and food nearby, access to the L train to Williamsburg and away from the crap in Times Square yet still accessible.

or taxis

Go out to street, raise hand, yell if you think its needed, towards taxis with lighted taxi sign on top.

I stayed at the Hilton Times Square. It was actually reasonable compared to some others.

And were pleased with our location. You're literally a half black off Times Square on a side street.

While I hate Times Square, I do like midtown and would generally recommend it for visitors. A lot depends on what type of person the visitor is and what they are looking for.

Had to book last minute one trip and ended up at Hilton Times Square - affordable, centrally located to many walking distance spots (w 42nd) and room was nice/clean - probably a 3 star.

Stay out of Manhattan. Try Brooklyn, Queens, or Bronx. Some parts of Manhattan are good, but stay away from TS.

My only complaint was the continental breakfast. They made it sound complimentary. I about shite when they handed me a $75 bill for 2 plates.

I thought it was free...

Good suggestion for people who have visited NYC multiple times and know what they are doing. Horrible suggestion for a newbie

Times Square

Don't do it. Financial District or Union Square area is way better.

Get lost on the subway. Seriously. It's the only way to learn it, and if you stick around Manhattan you won't get in a bad neighborhood. Once you learn the subway it infinitely opens up where you can go.

I agree. All the regular visitors implore people to avoid central Manhattan but they are basing that on having been multiple times. Times Square may be tourist central but isn't that the point of your first time to go?

I stay at the Marriott Marquis right on the Square and have had zero issues. I go for Broadway and can walk to any show I want. Central Park is a short walk, along with a bit of a hike to the Museum and Public Library. A couple of subway stops nearby and good food all over the place.

Yes, there are tons of tourists everywhere but I am not a local and not trying to pretend I am one either.
