I fully expect this thread to devolve to the usual, but last night I went out to one of my favorite bars (The Chart Room) for the first time since the ban. Boy was it strangely desolate for a Fri night.

Anyone who's been to the Chart Room knows it was a notoriously smokey bar. And anybody who knows Nola also knows it's a Nola institution. One of the last true "neighborhood bars" in the FQ. It's been ranked in "best bars in America" It's pretty packed on a nightly basis, especially service industry people, but last night you could've sat at any barstool at the bar. Very weird. It could've been an off night, it could've been due to the weather (doubtful), but it was strange.

What was also strange was leaving and not smelling like an ashtray , which I thoroughly enjoyed, but I don't put my selfish wants above others freedoms.

Anyway, I hope this doesn't kill their business. It would be sad for the Quarter to lose such a mainstay.

Private businesses should be able to allow smoking if they want. If I choose to go there or not go there, that is my decision.

I used to go in the Chart on a regular basis... now, I just walk on by. Or I may grab one, but then I go sit outside and leave afterwards. My sidewalk drinking is way up.

It is kind of stupid, as much as I can't stand cig smoke. If I smoked, I'd be pissed.

When in first walked in there were more people outside than inside. Problem is they don't have much space outside on the sidewalk.

I don't smoke, I hate cig smoke, and I'm pissed. Most bars were smoke free anyway because businesses responded to the market demand. There was no need for government interference in private business. Such bullshite.

Yeah but what about the pregnant people who work there? If they don't go there then they lose their jobs, are you saying that they should lose their job just because they don't want their babies to die of cancer? Are you really promoting genocide of unborn babies? Typical smoker...

I thought it was funny, I was talking to a guy in there who commented on how the ban was really affecting their business. I said yeah I don't smoke, but I'm not really for the ban.

He was surprised and said, well I think employees have a right to not have to work in smoke. All while ignoring the fact that if the ban affects their business, these employees may not even have a job in the future.

Do we have any idea what the trashy people are doing now? Sitting outside the entire night?

Maybe everyone was uptown

I will say that it probably will not affect bars outside of the quarter as much, as many already have a substantial outdoor area, and there isn't as much competition.

I mean, Finn McCools voluntarily banned smoking because they had ample outdoor seating. It was a good business decision.

Sucks to hear that. Love hanging out at the Chart Room. I could see how the ban would impact that place though.

Non-smoker here who doesn't mind a smoky bar FWIW

I was told you couldn't smoke on the sidewalks either. Is that true?
