I rooted my friends phone a few months ago on 4.4.2, piece of cake.

Care to share the method? ACtually, I can't even update to 4.4.2 for some reason.
ETA: Can you tell me how to update the OS not OTA? I was able to figure out jailbreaking fairly easily, but I have been having a lot of trouble with android

Been doing that. They speak at a level way, way beyond my comprehension.

I think there are some problems with the new firmware. I recently read to just stay where you are until they get it figured out and stable. I have an gs3 though.

Damnit. I unrooted to try the update. Just read on XDA that some people had success by taking out the SD card then running the update. I might try that tonight since I am already unrooted. If not, I shall just reroot and wait.
I was freaked out last night because it forced the update and I thought it was going to brick, but it just failed at 25%.
Thanks for the info.

Rooting a Nexus is a different animal than a Galaxy, unless they have a toolkit.

Thanks. I'll just wait until they update saferoot and safestrap.
ETA: I just remembered that I modified the tethering files to allow tethering, but I did not switch the files back to stock before unrooting. I assume I need to do that first to get the 4.4.2 update to work. Crap.

I know, but the vague thread title led to my reply. Might have better luck specifying the device if he wants specific info.

Might have better luck knowing that I needed a better thread title if you said so. I think it was fairly obvious that I am new to this shite.
