A southbound Amtrak train derailed Monday morning in central Vermont, state police told NBC News.

The accident occurred in the town of Northfield, about 10 miles south of Montpelier, the state capital.

An Amtrak train derailed Monday morning in central Vermont, state police told NBC News.

A spokesperson for the Montpelier Fire Department said they had reports of four people injured so far. There have been no reported deaths, the spokesperson, Lt. Dana Huoppi, said.

Initial reports from the scene indicated that five cars derailed, and two tumbled over a bank, Huoppi said.

What this needs is more government regulation.

Waiting on more details to emerge. I will update the original post if more injuries are reported.

I think it's a slower train up there than what we saw in Philly over the summer. Hopefully that means we'll see fewer injuries.

I don't know too much about the statistics, but these damn Amtrak trains must be the safest mode of mass transportation ever created. It seems like the death are minimal every time one derails.

Fun fact of the day, Acadiana has a higher population than the entire state of Vermont.

I bet someone put a penny on the tracks. That'll derail them every time.

Trains are dangerous. Ban trains. It's the only solution.

Another ignorant post. This happened here in Northfield, home of your basic blue collar working folks and Norwich University, birthplace of the ROTC and a conservative, military friendly university.
