I think it is rather pretentious to stack the list with poets. Why no science fiction authors? Ray Bradbury, Michael Crichton, Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein will have more lasting influence on American literary culture than most of those poets.

GTFO. Faulkner is not an easy read and therefore the average American cannot and will not read him, but to say he is awful is just asinine.

Ok, but he is doing what critics do, you have to be dead to make the cut and American poetry is to American Lit like a grain of sand is to the beach.

I'm sorry, but Stephen King deserves to be on that list of top-12. I know there is a bias against recent authors, but King is a God among men.

He absolutely deserves to be on that list

... No. Just no. I agree they are over represented on this list, but American poetry is essential to American literature. It is much more than a grain of sand on the beach and to say otherwise is blasphemy. Hell, Whitman alone is a beach unto himself.

I also think the list is a joke and this guy is a hack, but whatever.

Twain is pretty damn amazing but he used the n-word so he should be banned from any list and all libraries

"All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn".
-Ernest Hemingway

Ernie knew more about this issue than I ever will.

Steinbeck?

Poetry vs. Prose?

Prose all day, frick a poem.

Surprised to see Faulkner on this. I like him, but he's very polarizing.

Ah yes, I love list threads.

"This list doesn't reflect exactly how I would rank these items. This is is garbage and the author is a fraud."
