American public and diet- uninformed, dumb, or don't care?

Topic comes up as the obese woman in front of me at Subway tells her friend she's going to start coming here because she needs to lose weight, while ordering a footlong sub, making it a meal with chips and a drink (diet of course), and 3 cookies as well.
Our country's culture and acceptable dieting habits are pretty disgusting for those who understand basic nutrition. What is the reason so few Americans GAF about eating healthy or even just not eating like a total fatass. So much processed foods being passed off as healthy, that are terrible for you, and we buy them up anyway. Fast food is a large part of our culture as well, and we all know how healthy that is. The obesity and overweight numbers speak for themselves.
Made me wonder- is this all due to an uninformed public? Are we not, as a whole, educated well enough on basic nutrition? Is it just stupidity? So many fad diets out there that people turn to, which are ridiculous, but is this stupidity or desperation? Or do we not care? We rationalize that we will save money and buy processed, shite foods and sacrifice our health in the process.
What does the OT think?

I think the reasons are thus:
1. Eating unhealthy is generally easier and/or cheaper than eating healthy.
2. There are more options for unhealthy eating than healthy eating.
3. Ignorance as to what is healthy and what is not.
4. Lots of DGAF.

It wouldn't be as bad if we didn't live such sedentary lifestyle now. Whether work or for fun, most people are sitting behind a computer screen and not doing manual labor anymore so they are not burning any calories during the day.

I think convenience falls into that for a lot of people. They have the 'idea' that eating subway is healthy and it's a quick and easy fix to go there and order something.
She would be better off sitting at home and grilling chicken and making salads for the week than going to subway.

It's a lack of common sense and not giving a frick. One need not be a genius to understand a donut is unhealthy.

The reason, by far, is that people really don't care. They just do not give a shite.
Basic nutrition is not exactly rocket surgery, so I don't buy the dumb excuse. There are plenty of dumb skinny people in this country.
And we live in an information age. There is absolutely no excuse for anyone to claim that the overweight people in this country are just ignorant.

Subway restaurants really piss me off. They should be boycotted for their false advertising. Their food makes me want to puke. I'd rather eat McDonald's and acknowledge that I'm eating unhealthy food as opposed to eating Subway with the illusion of eating healthy.

You can actually eat fast food everyday and it not really impact you all that much. It's not about eating fast food, it's about the amount of calories consumed over specific time period (24 hrs).

So she must have the intelligence of a jellyfish.

Well, you're at Subway too.
Glass houses, rocks, etc.

Also, to answer your your original question, I think it's a combination of all of the above (uninformed, dumb, do not care). The masses are unintelligent, lazy when it comes to retrieving unbiased information and are incredibly gullible.

Biggest issue is a completely warped view of portion size

Krispy Kreme is not advertised as being healthy.
