They knocked the Badlands down to $147. Very comfortable. Got some other good deals.

I have a cobbler here local that told me if you're going to spend $400 on a shoe, you need to be buying Alden. Apparently they're the best USA dress shoe, as far as construction.
I am and was a big proponent of Allen Edmonds. Now, I only buy their shoes with the Danite rubber sole. Their wooden soles wear out too quickly.

they are unquestionably better, but you wont find many pairs of Aldens for $400
AE isn't what it used to be, but they're still good.

Do you mean leather sole?
I’ve found the rubber soles in general to be much more comfortable than leather soles.
Alden are made in the USA shoes as well and I believe they have some cordovan shell shoes that are really nice.

Alden is better. But I buy most of my AEs for like 200 bucks, so they're not really competitors in my mind.

I would agree that if you're paying full price for AE, then you might as well go up to the $400-600 range and buy some Alden.
About 5 years ago, you were able to get a pair of Park Avenues for less than $300 full price and around $200 during big sales. Now they rarely, if ever, get down to $300 on sale. They still make some great quality shoes, but not for $300-400 imo.

Yes. Sorry.
I had a good pair of Allen Edmonds I took to the Cobbler. He put a better leather sole on it and refinished the uppers for $148. Those shoes look and feel new now.
I'm not sure I'd refinish another pair of Allen Edmonds though unless I just loved the model and it was discontinued.
Alden's are way out of my budget though for shoes. Maybe when I become a baller.

Agreed.

You’re not getting new Aldens for $400. They aren’t a direct competitor of AE.
Also, shoe soles are leather, not wood.

I don’t even see the prices on Alden’s website. I guess if you have to ask...
I swear they used to have the prices and the shell cordovan oxfords were 6-700 a few years ago.

Alden makes shoes for JCrew that occasionally go on sale in the mid $400's. That's the best I've seen them.

Wearing my Alden Cape Cod horse-bit loafers right now.

I went shopping for them after the Cobbler recommended them to me.
The basic Oxford like I enjoy was about $675 standard. I purposed just to take better care of my Allen Edmonds.
If you don't make $200K a year, you probably have no business routinely buying Alden. But people spend money in different ways. I just spend $600 on dress shirts at Brooks Brothers this morning

So, is the object to make them as uncomfortable as possible?

Rancourt is closer in price to AE (at full price).
Much more limited, but another good option at about 300-400 bucks.

I’ll pass. The Rockports I have been wearing for over three years are holding up just fine

You don't "routinely buy" Alden. That's the point. They aren't tennis shoes.
Assuming you take decent care of them, they'll last you 20+ years.

Magnanni have become my go to dress shoe but I’ll chdck out Alden after this thread. I struggle to pay more than $350 a pair though.

The Black Friday sale had the Park Avenues for $197.
