Better legislation would be to require the alcohol sensing steering wheels. A lot more lives are lost to drunk drivers than back over accidents.

Who's going to pay to keep a breathalyzer calibrated in the vehicles? What happens when one malfunctions and won't let you start your car?

Being that anyone intoxicated in an accident automatically gets the blame, who's to say so called alcohol related accidents are actually a result of alcohol at all? They may have happened regardless of sobriety. There's no way to know. It's a faulty statistic.

I use my backup camera everytime I back up, I love it

it is much easier to see out of rather than my rearview mirror for close objects

I made sure my wife's car had one as well

Mine is in my rear view mirror. It is perfect and not a huge screen I have to look down at. I can look at all 3 while looking at that camera. Wouldn't buy a car with it any other place

Eta: I have a long truck, so I back up into spots 95% of the time, and it is nice to get close without hitting the car behind me

I agree, those are the only ones that are worth a shite.

It's just too much to have to look at 3 different mirrors, a screen and then turn your head around to look.

My wifes car, her two side mirrors move down when you put the car in reverse, fricking annoys the ever living shite out of me. I dont want to look at the ground, I want to be able to see whats behind me.

So much for cheaper trim levels for people who just want a basic radio without a giant screen.

Then again I work for an automotive infotainment company, so frick it.

So you like to drink and drive ehh?

Every car should have one.

Too bad so sad if it costs a little to keep calibrated so you don't get inconvenienced by a faulty starter.

Nothing can replace what I see when I look into ALL 3 mirrors AND turn around to see whats behind me as well.

no one is saying it's replacing anything.

a camera that lets you see what's directly behind your bumper is a great addition to what is already available.

I knew a guy in high school who backed over a little kid and killed him because his mirrors didn't show him what was directly behind his bumper. you think he or the kid's family would say these cameras are just a racket?

Just because one doesn't drink and drive doesn't mean they should be ok with a breathalyzer in their car.

Speeding causes lots of accidents. Should we put some sort of device that tracks speed limit on the road you're on and limits your vehicle's speed?

frick big brother.

hitting a kid with my car is one of my worst nightmares. Above Zombies but below falling off a cliff.

same here. that's why I love that I have my 3 mirrors and then the backup camera to see what the mirrors won't show me.

LINK to several different technologies being developed

I'm older and don't drink that often, but would love to have this technology on my car and the cars i will get for my kid in the future.

Although I don't have one, they are convenient for getting out of a tight spot.

I hate the idea of an alcohol detecting steering wheel. Way too much opportunity for it to frick up.

Can they come up with a plan to stop people from leaving their babies to cook to death in hot cars?

Hey look, if the backup cameras prove to save more lives having them required in all cars then fine. I'm just saying I don't really care for them. I guess I'm just use to checking my mirrors and turning my head.

you can still do that. no one is taking that away from you.

it's just an added safety measure that can be used or a fancy feature you choose to ignore.

better to have and not need than to need and not have, right?

I suppose it can't hurt. But is it necessary for the government to mandate it? Are they going to subsidies automakers to make this a standard feature in every american car built?
