I'm sitting in the ATL airport waiting on my flight, and I'm looking around at all the stores in the terminal. Brooks Brothers, Johnston & Murphy, Mont Blanc, etc.

How do these places stay in business? I never see anyone shopping there, and for the life of me I don't understand why someone would except out of sheer boredome or they forgot to pack something like a belt. I just can't imagine that's a very large market. But clearly someone is buying because they are in every major airport in the country.

In case a coup happens in Krakozhia, and you are stuck in the terminal for a year. Those stores would be necessary then.

don't do much shopping there but I get a 50% discount in most of those places, I sometimes buy golf clothes at the golf store, if I'm bored

Every store has a use at some point.

they are waiting on the people with 5 hour layovers to get bored and see something they like, or business travelers who realize they forgot something. If you have room in your carryon then you might as well get some shopping out of the way while you are there waiting instead of waiting until you get home to drive to the mall when you could be doing something better.

I am currently in BWI and it is the same here. I will say, they have a decent food court here and do not charge and arm and a leg like some airports.

I understand that, but I'm just saying that seems like a really small margin of people. And I rarely see a single person in these stores. I just wonder what the profit margin on these places is.

Who sees a Brookstone and thinks "I should pop in and get that alarm clock/waffle iron I've been eyeing while I'm here..."

The pricing is inflated to the point that only a few sales per day at these stores covers the overhead.
