Does this happen anymore? I never really hear anything about "Top Gun"-type fighting, even during our recent conflicts in the Middle East. Is that fighting style obsolete?

If two countries go to war and both countries possess an Air Force, there will be Air to air combat.

You looking for some hot drone on drone action? There's websites out there, and they are kinky.

We dropped 1,000 copies of Top Gun in Afghanistan, they all think it's real so they are afraid of Maverick and Ice

Oh, ok. That makes sense. I guess our conflicts over the last 20 or so years haven't really been Country vs Country. Rebel groups don't normally possess an air force

For the most part it's obsolete. That's why the F-35 isn't a great dog fighter. They didn't need it to be.

It gets shite on for not being the best air to air fighter, but it wasn't designed to be. It does so much more that is helpful in war.

I believe that the last time that we shot down another country's acft was the first Gulf War. I'm not certain, but I remember reading that semi-recently.

Exactly. If we wentcto war agaianst someone like Russia or China, there would be an air war.

But unless the Talaban, Al Queda, or ISIS figure out how to get goats to fly, there's really not going to be an air war there.

I'm sure our DOD knows, but does the OT know anything about North Koreas air to air capability, or do all their hopes and dreams lie with a not-so-intercontinental ballistic missile?

The Air Force and Navy made that same mistake in the mid-60s. The result was the F4 Phantom which didn't even have a gun on it initially. Worse yet, our pilots were not trained to dog fight because it was deemed "obsolete". They reasoned all a fighter aircraft had to do now was get radar lock and launch air-to-air missiles.

Only when our pilots started getting their asses handed to them in the skies over Vietnam by communist Mig 21s did they realize how big of a mistake they'd made. The result was the Navy established their "Top Gun" school and the Air Force hastily reinstituted dog fight training.

(Downvote it all you want, that won't change the fact I'm right)

I think air to air in a true dog fight scenario would be few and far between. I read somewhere the F22 can pick out and eliminate a target before it knew the F22 was in the area. Air to air would happen miles apart instead of up close and personal...but, it was on the internet so who knows

As has been mentioned, it takes being in a war with a country to get that. Also, the United States Air Force is so advanced, that they usually win pretty easily I would think.

They've got a handful of MIG-29s which is their most modern fighter. But they also have a bunch of Chinese copies of the MIG-17s which have been around since the mid-1950s. Looks like the backbone of their Air Force is the Chinese copy of the MIG-21. They've also got a bunch of MIG-19s.

Of those types, only the MIG-29 could be considered a "modern" fighter. The rest of them are little better than target drones compared to our aircraft.
