Anyone have any experience training and/or racing CX? I've raced XC, but want to switch it up a little and am thinking CX might be the way. Does anyone have any suggestions on an affordable <$1000 CX bike that can also be used as a commuter? TIA

Try bikesdirect.com

I have 2 bikes from them, same components as the name brands. All frames under $3000 outsourced by the name brands and probably come from the same factory.

I was looking for some sub $1k cyclocross bikes and didn't really see any before I got distracted. You could get a hybrid but they're not really built for racing like all the cyclocross bikes are.

Or you could look for a used one on craigslist. A lot of people buy bikes, ride them once, and sell them a year later for 1/3 the price.

A lot of them seem to think they need brand new tires because they let it sit and the air leaked out of the tubes.

You could probably find a used Specialized CruX on ebay for less than 1k. Otherwise you are SOL brand new.

This. I ride with a couple of guys that have BD bikes and they have no complaints. My next bike might be their Hal 6.

I would look at buying a frame and building it up yourself with low end parts then up grade one by one as your budget allows,if you have the skills and tools. but any co-op will be a huge help when building up your first bike.

soma wolverine is a good looking and really good value frame

(would probably be looking at a bit over $1000 though, but it will be a lot nicer than most mail order bikes)

I would suggest spending a little more money and get a Kona Private Jake.

I plan on doing a frame up build. My current bike is a Diamondback Sync'r, which came stock loaded with race face everything and a 1x10. It's an aggressive hardtail, if you're not familiar with it. Going to upgrade the fork to a X-fusion Sweep RL2 in preparation to use it on a later build. It's a fun bike and feels indestructible. If I go FS, probably going the Kona Process route.

I have a Redline Conquest Sport. Think I paid $650 a few years back. You won't get top of the line components, obviously, but it'll get you started in the mud.

Yeah I mean I don't need top of the line CX bike. This is just me putting my toes in the water. I already have a $5k XC bike!

I bought a Trek Cross-Rip from Capitol City Cyclery for around $800. I love it.

I'll trade ya. I haven't used my cx bike off the road in bit and I'm looking to get on the MB trails more. Been on the lookout on Craigslist for a deal.
