More advixe for all you parents to infants out there:

You're in for an expensive, stressful 2-3 years if you demand your child be admitted to the hospital every time he's congested and running fever.

I find the urgent care by my house has much better doctors and you don't have to sit in a waiting room for 2 hrs with a sick kid like the pediatrician. In reality I just need someone to write a script most of the time.

What pediatrician's office are you waiting 2 hours in?

I've never waited more than 15 minutes at Baton Rouge Clinic whether for our normal pediatrician or 3 or 4 others that we've seen on short notice when our's was out.

Very true. I find that moms generally seem to have a great gut instinct on these things also.

This.

Today, there are far more idiot nurses and even some doctors out there than the good ones.

Depending on severity of said fever... I mean if we're talking 103+, damn right they need to be in the ER

I'm also in the medical field. You're an idiot if you think 103 fever needs to be in the ER. You sure you're a medic? Every medic I know would laugh at what you said. Just as another poster stated, you treat with Tylenol/Motrin and monitor. Fever doesn't automatically mean ER. You call your PCP, and follow up with them the following day if unable to break fever. Most likely it's vital and will pass.

I have 4 chirrens and only time I took a kid to the ER for a fever was under the golden month rule Dr Bankston told us to abide by(under a month old + fever over something like 101 = take kid in). Other than that. If a kid ain't fricking feeling bad and passing out, I don't really pay much attention to whether it's 102 or 103 degrees.
Motrin/Tyelenol tango and wait it out.

eta: have to add. I would be concerned if the meds didn't reduce the fever. But if it breaks and returns a few hours later and repeat, we're good.

This is not correct. Fevers can be managed at home, call the pediatrician if it wont break. After 6 mos. Tylenol and Motrin can be alternated. If they are under 30 days with a fever, or otherwise not vaccinated, they need to go to the ER. I just watched a continuing education video in which a pediatrician said thi

Not only is that stupid, if some young parent actually takes your advice, it could kill their kid. If s fever gets high enough and stays up, if can either kill a child or leave them with brain damage. I'm not saying take your kid to the ER every time they get a fever. But if that fever hits really high levels and stays up, you get medical attention right then.

My 6 month old son woke up last Friday morning with 102 fever

Took him to the pediatrician and they ran test for RSV & pneumonia. Ending up being early stages of pneumonia, he's finishing his amoxicillin. Alternated Tylenol & Motrin and the fever reduced completely by Sunday.

Tough to see him hurting

Darth WTF. Did you read the part about IF IT WON'T BREAK? Crazy ole coot. You are the authority on war history and motorcycle gangs. But I think our pediatricians today have a handle on raisin' babies.

I agree with what he said.

I've had a kid admitted under 30 days(our stupid asses took her to a tailgate at 3 weeks old and got a bug).
I've had a kid with RSV(fever wouldn't break and he started wheezing).
I've had a kid who NEVER gets sick get bacterial pneumonia( she became lethargic for 2 days and wouldn't eat as well as high fever).

Just be a parent and pay attention. but don't freak out about an otherwise symptomless fever that breaks with OTC meds.

Im still on my first cup. I did miss him saying "if it won't break". I just didn't want some parent thinking their 9 month old was fine after running a fever of 104 for a day or so.

Any responsible parent will know what to do in the event of a high fever, that's why the lowers crowd the ER.

Here is some "advixe" for you,

1. You don't know more than the doctor

2. Bringing an infant to the er is insane and likely the reason your child is sick now

3. An infant can't tell you how they feel but a person who has gone through 10 years of medical training knows what they are looking at better than you who can barely type out a legible post on the Internet

People who demand all these tests they don't need because they think they know more than the doctor they are paying to go see is one of the things wrong with health care in this country today

Someone at the doctors says its OK. Here's a shot and he/she will get over it....if you feel you need to go to the ER then do it. Even there a nurse practitioner they will say its just congestion and a fever he/she will be fine......if you feel they need more attention you fricking demand it. Second time its happened to us. We learned from my other son and they just told us our 6 no old was fine. Just a bug. Well they had to admit him. His white cell count is sky high and his fever is pretty severe. They will try to send you home. An infant can't tell you how bad they feel. Its your job to speak up. I'm glad I'm an a-hole and kept pushing them to run tests and blood work. Be vigilant.

Seriously, here is some advice for you. Learn to read and write the English language so that you can teach your children as they get older. It will benefit both of you greatly.

Asking questions of health care professionals is 100% OK but being "an a-hole" is ridiculous. Basically what I read above is that you are going to piss and moan until they do what you want regardless of what they are telling you. In that case, just disregard their twelve years of medical schooling and treat your kid at home. You apparently know best.

Why do so many parents freak out over a fever? Isn't it the body's way to fight infection?
