Just got cussed for giving pears to the horse in the pasture next to my house. How many pears would it take to founder a horse.

Would you want someone to come by your house and toss your dog/cat/kid some treats?

I was feeding a horse an apple and a couple carrots one day in the pasture across the street and had one of my kids with me. The owner came hauling arse down the street on a 4 wheeler asking me what I was doing. I told him and he said be careful because the horse has been known to bite. I think he was more concerned about my kid feeding it but I know better than that ( my cousins all had horses). I believe he was more concerned from a liability standpoint.

He said feeding a horse pears would founder him and he would have to be put down.

Generally, you shouldn't mess with another person's animal without their permission.

Generally you are probably correct, but that doesn't answer my question.

I got bit by a fricking horse when I was about 6 years old. I both respect and hate those magnificent sons of bitches.

More than 4 for sure
Unless it was a horse pre disposed to founder (metabolic issues) I'd say you were fine.

It is a very bad thing. Can be something mild that they can recover from all the way to having to be euthanized.

I have a friend that is asking for pears to give her horse. I also had a

I'd have no issue with someone giving pears to my horse.
The kids feed him all kinds of crap while I'm there. He's very fond of pizza and hot fries and hot Cheetos.
Like I said, no founder issue unless the horse was already pre disposed somehow. And then it wouldn't be out on a pasture full of grass unless it had a muzzle
I was only trying to explain to fr33 in very lay terms about founder.

Welp that is the closest thing to an answer I am going to get I suspect.

Was there grass in the pasture? If so, and the horse wasn't wearing a grazing muzzle, you weren't going to founder him with 4 pears.
Owner likely just doesn't want anyone feeding his horse. Liability issues, as stated above.
